    Posted: 25 February 2010 at 1:18pm

I brought a carseat from farmers that goes from birth right up to 5 years old and it also comes with one of those car seat straps that go across the babies head when it is reward facing while they are newborn and clips to the back of the seat of the car. I have a little Nissan sentra car and the seat fits perfectly but i want to know if you HAVE to have the strap buckled in when baby is in there that goes from the back of the car seat over the babies head to the back of the seat of the car. It seems stupid to have it as when we take bubs out we have to pop the boot all the time to unclip the buckle, and same when we put bubs back in. I can put my car seat belt through the bottom of the car seat like it tells me too and also buckle bub's in with the harness but do i really need to have the buckle done up over his head and is it illegal to not have it ?

If its the anchor strapyour talking about then yes it has to be there and yes it has to be buckled. But you don't have to undo it everytime to get bubs in and out, you just leave it done up and lift overtop of it.

Yeah it is the anchor strap Oh ok that sounds way easier then But i dont know where to attach the bolt as over the seat of my car seat then has a boot cover so you cant see in the boot, but isnt strong enough to attach the bolt to, so not too sure where i would put the bolt

Take your car into a local mechanic and ask them to fit one for you - they'll know where it goes. Lifting bubs over the anchor strap can be a bit awkward, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine!

Yep as the others said you have to use it. If it is on there its the law sorry  second also taking it to a mechanic costs about $30 when we bought ours from the baby factory they told us to ask them to do it when the car got a service (pity our car never gets serviced hehe) and that they should also do it free but meh it was $30

Also if your clever you can get baby under the tether strap while their really little just takes practice

Our tether strap actually has a adjuster on it by the car seat so you can loosen it and then pull it right when you put baby in.

Ive just tried it in our car but unfortunately it cant bolt to anything else but the bottom of the boot, which means it's got to reach over the car seat and over my car's back seat and go down to the bolt on the bottom of our boot, but it wont reach, the strap isnt long enough, i have a hatchback car so thats really the only place it can bolt to without wrecking too much, any one else got any suggestions ?

You can buy an extender strap that attaches to the tether strap. We have to have this as we have a station wagon and the tether wasn't long enough either. The baby factory sell them - not sure about the cost, but it certainly wasn't expensive

Farmers also have the extender straps (I think a little cheaper), they come in 2 different sizes. It may pay to measure before you go and get one as we now have 2, one which doesn't fit .

I just used to loosen the anchor strap to lif Caden out and then tighten it when I put him back in.
Bella is in her capsule still

ETA- I had to buy an extender strap too, from babycity or baby factory, easy easy.
Im lucky as my car already had a bolt to clip the strap to, some cars come with them! (new model cars)

We are the same, we just loosen the strap too. But its on both the carseat and capsule.

Dont capsules have the tether straps in NZ?

Yes it is odd that the capsules dont have it. I lived in Oz when my daughter was born and they had such strict rules on things like that. I too have one of those carseats that go from newborn and a hatchback car. We have found a place under the seat to fix the tether strap to. My DH is very handy and up with the play with things like that so he will fit it. You could look at that option, do the bottom of your seats lift up as you could attach it under there to the seat belt clip - bit hard to explain, sorry!

Yeah I find that so weird since Aus and NZ share the same safety code They are very strict with car seats here in Aus and QLD has just introducted that all children 7 and under must be in a child restraint according to their age and weight.

Our capsule has a base (as do all capsules sold in Aus) so I wonder if thats the difference with having the tether strap or not. Hmmm intersting. I personally wouldnt buy a capsule or carseat without a tether strap, but thats just me.

ETA typos
