Can anyone tell me how much is too much exercise and how will i know if its affecting my milk. I started exercising a few weeks ago and this week ive cranked it up another level as i wasnt seeing any results......i did 1hr and 20mins all up yesterday and today my 11 week old has at times been crying for food 30mins after ive just finished feeding him.........

Questions, would the exercise make my milk less filling? or will it make the quality go down or the amount or ive also heard the taste gets bitter and baby doesnt like it anymore

There is a 12 week growth spurt.

I'm not sure otherwise, are you drinking loads of water when you exercise? Fattartsrock will have info on this anyway.

I always found in the evenings after I had been for my run that my milk quality was poor and I didn't have much left!

I always had EBM in the freezer and would top her up before bed with a bottle of that just to make sure she was having a good feed. She always took the EBM so that made me think that my milk wasn't that great after exercise.

That probably doesn't help at all, but thought I would share my experience!

this pretty much answers it and a few other sites like kellymom .........

Research Design and Methods. Twenty-four women, 2 to 4 months’ postpartum, completed 3 test sessions: a maximal oxygen uptake test, a 30-minute bout of moderate exercise, and a resting control session. One hour before and 1 hour after each session, participants fully expressed their milk, placed it in a bottle familiar to the infant, fed their infant, and rated their infant’s acceptance of the milk. Each feeding was videotaped and viewed individually by 3 lactation consultants who rated infant acceptance; consultants were blinded to the test sessions. Milk was analyzed for LA and infant milk consumption was measured.

Results. There were no differences in presession versus postsession values for maternal skin temperature, breast milk temperature, and infant milk acceptance as judged by either the mothers or lactation consultants. These results prevailed despite a small but significant increase in breast milk LA premaximal versus postmaximal exercise (0.09 vs 0.21 mM, respectively); there was no difference in milk LA premoderate versus postmoderate exercise, or prerest versus postrest.

Conclusion. These data support the hypothesis that moderate or even high-intensity exercise during lactation does not impede infant acceptance of breast milk consumed 1 hour postexercise.

That may be so, but I certainly found my supply dropped when I started exercising when Jake was about 3-4 months old. He was really hungry that week, added two feeds (one at night!) and didn't gain any weight (was monitored closely as he had heart surgery at 6 weeks) but I lost a kg. As soon as I stopped exercising he went back to his normal amount of feeds, stopped grizzling and started gaining weight. I also put the kg back on! I didn't try again while BFing, but the weight fell off when I stopped.
With Morgan I left exercising til she was almost 7 months and fully establised on solids (plus 1 formula at night) and I haven't noticed a change. But I'm only walking for 20-30mins a day generally, nothing intense.

I had heard it can change the taste afterwards cos of the sweat too (so maybe give the boobs a clean after exercise?) but neither of mine seem to be bothered by the taste and have fed normally.

I heard that exercise can increase the lactic acid in breast milk. You would probally have to be exercising pretty hard out for baby to get upset though

Lou - make sure you increase your water and protein intake if you're exercising.
When you're BFing you're supposed to eat 500 extra calories a day (think it's that much) and then if you exercise and burn all that off, then in theory that would mean the extra calories you need for BFing are no longer there?

I have been doing muscle and toning exercise but no cardio. BFing is basically replacing my cardio workout for me as the weight of coming off in the same way it would via cardio work. So I'm just doing the toning exercises to pull it all back in.

Oh lou, it sucks eh. My body clung to the extra fat while BFing too. I just didn't worry about it til I finished (after my disasterous attempt that week) and it all came off as soon as I stopped. This time I'm taking it slowly and it is coming off gradually.
Hope it starts moving for you soon! Bubs is still very young though, plenty of time.

I heard that lots of exercise and diet while BF produces more foremilk, less fat = less filling for baby.
