    Posted: 06 March 2010 at 5:20pm
So I just noticed last night that DD (12 months) has some seriously uneven leg creases! She only has one small crease on her right thigh, about an inch above the knee. On the left thigh, there's a deep crease running 1/2 way round the leg at 1 inch above the knee, and another large crease 1cm below her bottom crease (also goes 1/2 way round leg, not there at all on the other leg).

I know leg creases are meant to be even in younger babies, do they need to be in older ones? DD is a good crawler and climber, but no where near walking yet (is very uneven when walking held up by someone).

Any thoughts?1

My daughter had very uneven creases too and had to be monitored regularly until she was walking - which was 10 months so obviously didn't effect her... you should prob take her to the Dr to have her hips checked just to be sure... has the Dr or plunket ever mentioned it before?

No, no one's noticed, she's always had really rolly thighs! They've just disappeared on one leg and not the other.

The hip check is part of the early checks they do so I assume all was okay then but I'd get them rechecked just to be sure.... what do you mean very uneven when walking?

Her left leg flies out to the side, and the right one just follows, she walks sideways like a little crab. She's probably favouring the left side and made it stronger, hence lack of creases. Maybe. Gah, babies!

Uneven creases are one of the things that a physio (me) or a Dr should look for when checking hips as it can indicate leg length discrepancy or hip problems (but don't panic they don't always). So I'd strongly recommend you get those hips checked properly. GP's in my experience have a bit of a go but most don't really know what they're doing so see if you can get someone you trust to do it.

Yep Clodagh had (has) this as well and has just been monitored by GP, Plunket and also we had her scanned to make sure her hips are ok. At this stage they seem to be so yes definately go to a specialist or ask your GP for a referral to get her a scan perhaps?

Yeah, my oldest had this and it was noticed around the 10-11 month mark, he went for a hip xray just to rule out any problems... it turned out one leg was just more defined than the other from how he moved around (about that time was when he started bum shuffling, and using one leg to propel himself more than the other)

but definitely get it looked at, pays to be safe rather than sorry

I was just wondering the same thing the other day. SIL who is a physio (albeit just graduated) checked and said her hips were ok but did notice that one leg was slightly longer then the other. So gonna get my act together and get her to the GP to check

Yeah, called plunketline, who said see plunket nurse, rang them, who said go to GP, but prob nothing to worry about, it will just get things done quicker if it IS something to worry about. Got a day off tomorrow so will go see GP then.

Ryan's creases are a bit uneven - but they check them every time and apparently he just has one leg fatter than the other - lol!

I had never heard of this!!! Daniel has one more leg crease on his left leg than his right. I'll have a better look once he wakes up & check with the GP next time we're there.

Went to GP yesterday, he also reckons probably nothing, but referred for an x-ray just in case. He had a good go at moving her legs etc, there appears to be no problem, but he knew an adult who has missed hip displasia so wants it checked anyway.

DD2 has uneven leg creases, but a paediatrician, a GP and the plunket nurse all seem to think her hips are fine.

That's good SquishysMum. Probably nothing to worry about but definitely worth checking because if there is a problem treatment is much simpler if picked up early.

And sorry, I didn't mean to worry everyone about the leg creases either, but as I said, it is one (of many) things we look for when examining the hips.

The reason I encourage people to get hips checked is that if DDH is picked up in a newborn they go into a little harness for a few months (can wear nappies, clothes etc) but if left until later (when the hip bones are more developed) they have to have hip/leg plasters and sometimes surgery which is obviously much more unpleasant. Whoops, that turned into a lecture, sorry. I'll shut my mouth now.
