So i have looked at the IRD website and i know that the forms can be sent off at the end of the tax year and all that but i was wondering; do the charities and stuff you give to normally send out the tax receipts pretty quick? if so, generaly when do they arrive. and once you have those, how long does IRD take to get the rebate back to you oncce you have sent everything in? we are pretty broke and i realsied that if we actually send of our receipts this year a couple of grand would look really nice in our bank account. lol. but id like to be able to put it in our budget so i can figure out it we will have to forfeit mortgage payments or not.

Thanks :)

In my experience it varies from charity to charity. If you are needing it urgently then give them a ring to ask them to send asap (Worldvision are pretty good from my experience). IRD usually pretty fast at rebate (about a week), but we do all this through accountant have never done it myself before.

We do it ourselves. Most charities have the statement out within a month and we find IRD can be 2-4 weeks.

I co-ordinate a World Vision donations group at work consisting of about 20 people's donations.  I apply for the charitable rebate on everyone's behalf.  It went sooo easy when I recently applied for the rebate for 1 Apr 08 - 31 Mar 09 tax year.

World Vision sent me the receipt within a week.  I filled in the appropriate IRD form and found the money in my bank account within the week even before the tax summary arrived in the post!

If you need any other advice in this area just PM me - I'm quite familiar with it, or just go to www.ird.govt.nz and there's a section in there on charitable rebates with lots of helpful stuff.

man thats awesome, world vision is one of them so good to know they are pretty quick, the youth organisation and stuff we support are going through major upgrades at the moment and that is where the bulk of our money goes so hopefully they wont get too distracted with all the renovations and re-staffing and stuff.

is it the 1st of april that they can send the receipts out?

Hi Monikah - once the charity have all their incoming donations totalled 'til year ending 31 March 2010 they can send out the receipts.  I'm not too sure how long that process will take, but WV seem to be pretty efficient.  I've always rung and asked for the receipt - I'm not sure if they send them automatically.  Their 0800 number is good for that.

You can get the charitable rebate form off the IRD website if you have a printer.  I was surprised at how easy the whole process was.  (Don't forget to apply for the childcare rebate on the same form, if that applies to you! ).
