Topic: Strech & Sweep.. Posted: 25 March 2010 at 9:49am |
My midwife goes away next week untill the 14th April, i get to see her once more next week and then see my back up one every week untill my midwife comes back, Im due on the 16th April and on Tuesday night when me and my partner were at my midwife appointment she suggested that if i wanted she could do a stretch and sweep on me next week at our appointment before she goes away...She also told me that bubs is now 1-2/5ths engaged..Im not too sure why she suggested doing this. Has anyone done this before they were actually due and how did it work ? Did it make labour start or anything ?
I know everyone is different but im only 37 weeks tomorrow and when i see her next week ill be basically 38 weeks, is this not too early ??

*shudder* I cringe when I think of a s&s!
I had two done but I was 9 days overdue and she was heavy.. but I also went to the herbal shop and brought some raspberry leaf tea (I think that worked!)
I thought it was an option if you were going over your due date

Unusual for a MW to offer to do it before term. Most will only do it at 40 weeks, mine was 41 weeks. And if the baby's not ready, it won't do anything.

I had mine done at 37 weeks to start the induction process and had him 2 days later (after a lot of other intervention) Was for me, not because of bubs, but he was fine 8lb, breathing fine, covered in vernix, just slightly jaundiced.

I thought usually it was done at 40 weeks too ...
and I agree with Flissty , if baby aint ready , it wont do anything .
With Caitlyn it worked , Ty I had 2 s&s neither worked he still came a week after them

I also thought they only did them at 40 weeks+ . i had one on my due date at 8pm and my waters broke 4 hours later at midnight and had baby at 1.25pm in the arfternoon , so mine was definatly successful , but also its becuase she was all engaged and ready to go and i was already 2cm dialated before she did the stretch and sweep . I agree- if babys not ready , i dont think it will do anything .
good luck with everything tho you have an amazing journey ahead

Hiya bubie, if you don't mind me asking, who's your midwife?
Even just her initials and I'll be able to figure it out

I had 2 - The first one was around 40 weeks and the second was 5 days after my due date. On my birthday, yay
The first one was bloody painful because my cervix was in completely the wrong place and she almost couldn't reach it, ie not ready yet. She stopped that one quite quickly since it wasn't working so it was never going to do much, but I did get some of my show overnight.
The second one wasn't painful at all since my cervix had come well forward and I was looking ready to go, so she stretched me to 2cm and while it didn't seem to do a thing I went into labour all by myself 4 days later.

I had about three but with all of them I was in labour MW was trying to get things to get moving abit more. Weird that they would offer that at 38weeks I would think. I was also well engaged MW couldn't even feel DD's ears at my 37week check up.

Yeah i think im just going to go with lots of walking and eating pineapple I dont really think it would be a good idea to do the stretch & sweep as 3 days ago at my midwife appointment he was only 1-2/5ths engaged, will see if he is more engaged at my next appointment this Thursday
Also i know this sounds silly as i am 19 years old, but kinda abit embarrassed and would find it really hard to let her do it unless i was due or in labour and in pain, as no one has ever really been done there.

have lots of nice relaxing baths lying on your left side, its the best side for baby to move down , plus ...its entertaining trying not to slide your big belly all over the place
If it does end up she needs to do it , or an examination etc(and chances are , she will ) just go to your happy place, it never takes very long

Ooh I second the hot baths. (You might want to have someone there to help you get out though) Even if they don't work they're so nice and relaxing... Wish I had time for a hot bath now!
