LOL - I don't know what the proper name is for them - maybe bouncinette or something.
For you already mums out there - are they useful? Do I need one? Whats a good one? How much should they cost?
Thanks

yeah bouncinettes
they are a must have in my opinion they are an easyily moveable, safe place to put bubs when you are busy doing other things.
they can be costly or cheap, depending on how fancy you want to go.we have a fisher price kick n play one, both kids love it! i think from memory prices range from $70-130?? its been a while since i was looking at them. there's always trademe too

I just have a basic old-fashioned one but it's great for the early months before baby can sit or play. The elevation is good for reflux babies; the personal space feel is good for toddler siblings; and the baby can watch you. They're great for letting the baby lie in while you're trying to eat dinner too (rock with one foot)!
Basic ones are quite cheaply available on TM so really so can have the whole range of price for a bouncinette.

I've been given an old crochet type one. I'm not too sure, but will I need an insert of some type? I can't think of the word for it, but to keep baby a bit more stable?

Like a restraint Sparkle?
Sounds like these are a bit of a requirement then aye. I hadn't even thought about getting one but noticed that lots of you seemed to have them so thought I had better ask.
Thanks ladies!!

My mum had one for me and my brother and said she would have been at a loss without it. We have been given one, nothing overly flash but also has a row of toys that can hang over the baby so they can play and quite happily keep themselves content. The real basic ones from my mums day don't have those I don't think

The crochet ones don't have toys (those are the ones you're talking about from your mum's day Stacey), and the "restraint" is pretty basic but okay. You wouldn't put a baby in a bouncinette without supervision anyway.
Leish I didn't have one for my first child but it worked great with #2.
Sparkle I'm looking to make a soft cover for my one (I have the same type as you) but they are fine to use without - just lay a thin blanket on before putting baby on. Otherwise they get "honeycomb" marks on the back of their heads lol.
Only thing to watch is if you have an older child, they may try to help you by bouncing the baby rather energetically - so I did with my little sister and she flipped right over!

I'd say the cheap ones (crochet types) are more than suitable! I used to put Han in front of the fridge in hers and she'd stare at the magnets for ages! Also used to drag her into the bathroom with me while having a shower and she'd quite happily sit in that for my 10 minute+ showering. (Haven't given up long showers 10 minutes might be a gross underestimation!)

I didn't have one with Christopher and don't remember missing it but it sounds like they are soooo useful - for lots of things - like long showers... mmmmmm - I love long showers too Nikki

I love them...they are a god send...means baby can see you but there is a separation ( a good one) between you and mum can actually do stuff without a cling on - and very moveable from place to place easily!
We found a cool one where the toys dont go all the way across in front of baby, lights can go and can vibrate also...is a Safety 1st brand "delightful dreams rocking bouncer" and varies in price at Kmart depending on specials on at the time...it has a three point harness on it and a soft fleecy seat with cover that is machine washable (important) - think we got it for $70 or so...

I've got two of the Fisher Price Linkadoo infant to toddler rockers and I wouldn't be without them - in fact I was lost without them while we were up north. The ones I have rock and vibrate and also lie flat for a newborn. I use them to feed the girls in coz it means I can feed two at once, and the toys keep them entertained for ages. They were $70 and I've already had my $$ worth, but they convert to a toddler chair for up to 18kg and Maya has already tested them out!

I have a pretty basic winnie the pooh one, doesn't have any toys or anything. It has definately been a godsend - Ashleigh won't sleep in her cot for her last sleep of the day for some reason so she sleeps in her bouncer and we can rock her to sleep and can rock her while we eat dinner etc.
Just be careful with the flash ones - my sis bought one but it was too "bucketlike" if you get what I mean, baby was too folded in it and couldn't like straight so she sold it and bought a cheaper one that is more flat!! Here is an oldish pic of Ashleigh sleeping in it!!

LOL Kelly, Maya was the same - between 4-7pm she would 'catnap' in the bouncinette, or in my arms, or the pram etc. but not in the cot. Then at 7pm she would go in the cot no trouble at all. The twins are the opposite - they won't sleep anywhere EXCEPT their cots lol.

I went out and bought quite an expensive one when Charlotte was only a few weeks old after seeing my friend with one. I use it every day, even now - its so handy to have. Charlotte likes to sit on the bench with me when I am cooking dinner and I also feed her in it. Yep, its a total mess and needs washing from time to time but I so couldn't have done without it.

I have the oldest and ugliest one of these and I would not be without it. We inherited it with Quinn and he spent ninety percent of his first few months in it. Kaia is not quite as keen to sit as he was but still worth having!
