I know HCG is fickle but....

I have been getting weekly bloods, just to make sure everything is tracking ok this time around. Basically to pick up another missed mc if there was to be another.

Last week at 8w3d my levels were 174000 (nice and high) and this week at 9w3d they had dropped to 87000.. they have halved in a week. The nurse told me this was perfectly normal, but it just didnt sit right with me. I rang my mw and got her back up (I had forgotten she was on holiday) who was lovely and said at this stage it could go either way.. it could be fine, it could be bad news as it is still within normal ranges. So she has faxed a scan referral and i have to ring and book in the morning.

Sadly, I just cant muster any positiveness. I just feel like I am waiting to be told I have lost another baby!

I can understand your fears after what you've been through. Try not to get too down until you know for sure.
When's your next blood test?

I *hate* hCG results. Mine also had me worried. Although it doesn't help with the feelings I just told myself that there really was NOTHING I could do, so best to rest up and think positive.
Fingers crossed for you!
Thinking good thoughts for your scan tomorrow!!

Hugs Melnel!

hCG levels ARE very fickle like you say. They usually double every 24-48 hours between 4-6 weeks, then every 48-72 hours between 6-8 weeks peaking around 10 weeks then falling to a plateau and staying at that lower level for the rest of the pregnancy.

I had my levels done at 14 weeks due to bleeding and they were only 33,000 which freaked me out, but my baby was growing nicely and is now 2 1/2 mths old already!

From http://www.conceivingconcepts.com/learning/articles/hcg_ranges.html

Look most closely at progression: during the huge majority of early pregnancies (80-90%), the level will double every couple of days, or 72 hours. As your pregnancy progresses, levels rise and that doubling time increases. The expected doubling time for HCG levels:

• Under 1200 mIU/ml: 48-72 hours.

• Between 1200 to 6000 mIU/ml: 72-96 hours.

• Over 6000 mIU/ml: more than 96 hours

HCG levels rise during the first 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy then decline slowly for the second and third trimesters. The following presents some average expected HCG levels based on time after conception:

• week: 0-50 mIU/ml

• 1-2 weeks: 40-300 mIU/ml

• 3-4 weeks: 500-6,000 mIU/ml

• 1-2 months: 5,000-200,000 mIU/ml

• 2-3 months: 10,000-100,000 mIU/ml

• 2nd trimester: 3,000-50,000 mIU/ml

• 3rd trimester: 1,000-50,000 mIU/ml

• Non-pregnant females: < 5.0 mIU/ml

• Postmenopausal females: < 9.5 mIU/ml

Fingers crossed, seems from what Emma has written that it can be perfectly normal. Good luck with the scan and keep us posted.

chicky - I'm sure things will be just fine, I was the same with watching my hcg levels at the start of this pregnancy.
I had an early scan referral with this pregnancy at 9 weeks too, so I hope your levels are just being fickle like you say and you have a huge weight lifted off your shoulders in a few days when you see the heartbeat!

Thanks guys!

I know my levels are within 'normal' ranges, its more how much its dropped by thats the shocker. I know I should be positive, but part of me cant help but detach a little - self preservation.

Will be ringing the scan place first thing tomorrow morning so will definately keep you updated, I dont think we will get one for tomorrow so it will more likely be Thursday. I think thats whats bugging me too, I have to wait so long.

Well, I think a quick shower and an early night is in order...

Thanks again ladies, as always very supportive.

Good luck Mel- I have no idea but I thought HCG was *supposed* to drop toward the end of the 1st trimester?  Am sure it'll be fine. I know what it's like to worry though after losing one! ((hugs))

Well very happy to say, I was being a worry wart! I have one very energetic healthy baby! Arms and legs waving like mad and bouncing all over my uterus like it was a jumping castle! Most beautiful gray shape I have ever seen and lovely sounding heartbeat to boot.

I know HCG levels start to drop off towards the end of the first trimester, but while not unheard of, uncommon for the size of the drop in a week and there wasnt a platuea which "normally" comes first. Anyway, I am glad I freaked, if I hadn't I would not have seen my lovely baby. And no more HCG's now....... Cant wait to see my midwife so i can hear that hearbeat again!

Thanks for all the support (as usual), very much appreciated.

Fantastic news Melnel.  I'm really pleased the scan went well and that you got to see your precious baby.
