Topic: Early Scan Posted: 29 June 2006 at 10:07am |
Going by my LMI I am 5weeks and 4days today. I finally managed to talk to a midwife today and she said to go ahead and book a scan. I asked if it was a bit early and she said that the earlier it is done, the more accurate they can determine how far along I am. I spoke to a different midwife the other day and she said that the early scans increase the chance of miscarrying and told me not to book in for it until the end of July.
My question is, did anyone else have an early scan? Is this normal? I am not sure what to do. Part of me really wants to do the scan early (I would probably book in for it next Friday or something to make sure that there is def something in there for them to see) just cos I am curious and want to do something but the other part of me is terrified and I don't want to risk anything. What do you think...

I think Emma had an early scan if I remember rightly... she might be able to tell you more about it. All I know is that she is around 1/2 way through with twins now!!!

i had to have a dating scan with both my pregnancies, the first one with xanthe put us around 6 weeks, so we had to go back for another one two weeks later to make sure it was a pregnancy and not just an empty sac. This time we needed a dating scan and went in at 6 weeks and came out at 10! If it is necessary to have an early scan - ie you are unsure of dates etc, then have it, but otherwise i would wait till 12 weeks. Oh, and it is most accurate around 10-12 weeks, so if you can hang out till then you will get a really accurate due date from the scan.

I had to have dating scans with Andrew and this pregnancy. As I have PCOS, I tend not to have a visible menstrual cycle to count from. Andrew's scan dated him at just under 6 weeks (then I had another scan at 12 weeks for the nuchal fold test) and this one was at about 6 weeks too. Neither scan seems to have made a difference to these boys, however holding off a couple of weeks would probably give you a more developed view - at the moment you would see a tiny little sac with a tadpole like mass in it.
Good luck!

My friend went at ? 6 weeks and she was told it was too early,..and they couldnt tell if it was a baby or empty sac,..so she had to go back a few weeks later. I had one a 8weeks,..but that was for bleeding,..and my cycle was so regular I knew I was 8 weeks already.

I went at 6 weeks and they were able to pick up the heartbeat. I had a suspected miscarriage last year so my doc wanted to make sure all was looking ok.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I have booked in for next week at 6 weeks and 6 days. If it gets closer to the time and I feel like I can wait a bit longer - I will put it off another week. I am quite excited now though

I've had early dating scans for both my pregnancies around 6-7 weeks and have had no worries about doing them. I was just too keen to see my babies!
I can understand your hesitation after being told that, though I found it actually reassured me more having seen the little heartbeat in there. (after establishing that there is a heartbeat I think the chances of miscarriage are significantly less??)

Oh really Caramel... you wouldn't believe the loud sigh of relief I did when I read your post. I hope so as I am soooooo nervous and really feel like I need the reassurance that everything is going as it should. Thanks everyone. I am really worried. Hubby is really excited but I am a bit scared. It's gonna be a long week!!

I had my first scan at around 7 1/2 wks cos I only have one tube now after having an ectopic prior. As soon as i found out i was pregnant my doctor told me to book a scan.Im assuming if i was 6wks they would've done it then too. I dont wanna risk losing another tube and they needed to know it was in the right place this time. I then did'nt have my next scan til 19wks. But i still saw the baby at 7 1/2 wks, he measured 1 1/2cm or 14mm and looked like a cashew lol After that he got nicknamed cashew!
Goodluck Leish! Lets know how you go! Oh and Congrats!

Yeah I was told at my 8 week scan that most MC happen when there is an empty sac,..so the fact that you see a heart beat means there is a real baby,..so the likelyhood of MC is reduced. They said it could still happen,..but was less likely to.

I had one at eight weeks as I was getting some stomach pains. We could see a little sac and a wee wee shape inside it. It was also really cool seeing and hearing the heart beat.
All the best for your scan!

Hehe, I must be the scan queen... have had them at 5, 6, 9, 12, 14, 17, 19 and 22 weeks so far and fortnightly until my gremlins put in their appearance..
My first scan at 5w5d was to rule out an ectopic as my hCG levels were high (wonder why ) and they saw a gest sac and a yolk sac but no baby yet. At 6 weeks 4 days they saw the heartbeat. And at 9weeks they saw... two babies!

I have a scan booked for next Wednesday, we have no idea of our dates so we are guessing that i'll be about 8 weeks maybe more maybe less. I am also having a scan to rulle out 2 as I have been very sick and there is a strong family history of twins in my family.
With Andrew I had a scan at 6 weeks due to bleeding (put down to implantation) and they could just pick him up and then another one at 8 weeks and he was there alright. If you have one next week or the week after they may tell you to come back in a few weeks to have another scan to see a baby.

I'm really looking forward to the scan now. It'll put my mind at rest to know if there is one or two in there. I too have very high HGC and the family history and unususal sickness all day points to 2, or it could be that it is a little girl as I had nothing with Andrew.
