Topic: Babar on Kidzone Posted: 02 September 2010 at 9:54am |
Does anyone else have a problem with this program or is it just me?
Even I find it upsetting and scary in parts.
When it first came on I thought, how cute, a program about elephants. Then big scary hunter came on and killed the mother and all the other elephants stood around the mother's body with the baby elephant crying. Each program seems to feature the hunter in one form or another.

OMG I need to get Kidzone - I grew up on Babar the elephant books I don't remember it being scary, the book I had was about Babar going to the opera. I loved it used to read it all the time.
I think some of the elements of childrens stories, rhymes etc that seem scary to us adults, go over kids heads. I think of the stories and characters I loved as a kid and not all of them were kind and nice.

I let DD watch it for 5 minutes yesterday before turning it off. I also remember it as a kid, i didnt notice the hunter but the show looked silly lol
DD loves Bumble & the Wot Wots and the silly show done at Capital E. I have forgotten the name now, with the people that dress up. She just finds the 'sheep' fantastic lol.

Seems to be a common question - I'm a member on another forum and the ladies on there have logged complaints with TVNZ...guess you could try that.
We don't watch Kidzone here.. DS prefers NickJr and Playhouse...

I was so excited when I found it on Kidzone.... that was until we watched the first one with the hunter in it!!
My 2.5 year old wouldn't go to sleep for ages that night because he kept hearing scary noises and thought it was the man with the "shooting gun"!
I should have turned it off after the first bit but kept thinking well it is a kids show so surely it won't be that bad!! Big mistake!!!
Glad it's not only me that thought it was a bit too scary for that time of the night!

Yeah Isla watched it and wasnt botherey by it, but I can see why u could be concerned.
Isla LOVES Captain Mack- its so radiculous but she thinks its so cool, lol!
She loves Milly Molly, numberjacks, Wotwots, Baby Antonios' circus too- pretty much everything thats on at the mo, lol. She missed Fireman Sam when they stopped showing that.

When Alyssa saw the beginning of the show and didn't like the look of the old fashioned style of cartoon so she said "this is a stink cartoon aye mummy?"

OMG, I've been thinking the same thing! Initially I thought this looks cute, but it was quite violent and they kept replaying the shooting of the mother elephant. We ended up turing it off. Might write to TVNZ too!

I didn't have a problem with it and neither did Jack when we watched it the other day, but I can see your point.
I think alot of children's books and stories have scary elements, think of the classics - Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, 3 Little Pigs, so Babar isn't unique in this
For some kids and at some ages they will be scared and for others it will go stright over their heads

hunters.... elephants... its a fact of life.... sadly it happens
if your child is displaying anxieties over the show then just change the channel ?! and talk about whats happened with your child
the same can be said about pocohontas.. a man steals and rapes the village girl..... snow white... attempted murder.. the list goes on....
I agree with the thought that i think most of it goes over kids heads... and for those that are REALLY worried... there is the 'pollitically correct kids story books'
'stepping off my soap box now'

Its only on a few episodes explaining how Babar came to live like humans and how the city happened..
In a couple of episodes it will be finished and then it will be a great programme with great moral tales.. though i did cry when Babars mum died!
