Just curious, when it comes to your children wanting further education- will you pay their fees? How about supporting them while they're at Uni etc?

We will be- I sort of see it as part of the parent package. We'll pay fees and cost of living but if they want spending money then they can work part time and earn it.

Probably Student Loan or they can apply to our tribe for funding.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My DH and I will be opening a bank account for our baby, that will only be used for there education, we feel education is important as we both have done it differently (studying part time now) we dont want our child having to worry about that.

Of course we will try and put as much as we can aside, but making a small difference like that will help a lot I think.

But we never know what will happen over the next 15 odd years for Andrew so we may be able to pay for them.

I'd like to say I'll pay, but if I end up with 4 who want to do expensive degrees like medicine then it could get pricey!
We have a family trust that would prob help out tho, and failing that, a student loan - it was good enough for me!

Oh but I will allow them to live board-free at home as long as they are studying, that's what my parents did for us. If they leave school/uni and get a full time job then they can pay their way.

We have a savings scheme and will try to help out as much as poss but I also think its important for them to take on some of the financial responsibility, either via part time work or taking a loan on. I will be happy if they don't go to uni as well though so long as they do apprenticeships or something similar.

We've already started putting money aside in an education fund. DH say's that if E goes off the rails, she's not getting any of the money!

My parents let us live at home for free while we were studying, and (I imagine) that's what we'll do for our kids. We had to pay for any course costs (fees, books etc - I got a student loan) and spending money (clothes, going out etc - I worked part time). I think the fact that I had to pay for my own education made me appreciate it alot, and I appreciate the way in which my parents did support me.

I was still studying when I left home and got married, so of course they didn't pay for rent or anything, but they did pay for things like the dentist and would sometimes give us a grocery or petrol voucher if they knew we were finding it really tight. Even now they paid for my dentist visit today cos they knew I wouldn't go otherwise lol.

I think we'll wait and see - if student loans are this cushy, then the responsibility could be a good thing, but if they're back to clocking up interest etc in 20 years time, then I think we would try to help, as that can be financially debilitating to a poor student... would definately not charge them for board though.

I like that idea lizzle!  we're planning on putting a little bit away every week once bubs is born but hadn't really thought about whether we'd restrict its use to education or not.  We don't live near a university so I quite like the idea of buying a house for them to live in wherever they study - plus that's an investment for us and can last through several kids (assuming they all study at the same uni!)

We started an education fund for Lauren when she was born, we just contribute each week into it!

If she decides not to go to university , we would then offer her the money to do an O.E, as we think its just as important to see the world as it is to get a degree of some kind.

With regard to day to day living costs, I believe that a part-time job never hurt anyone, so we would encourage that as long as it didn't jeopardise her study obviously and we would contriubte also.

For us we think as parents that we need to educate them until they can stand on their own two feet. Whether that is college or uni or help with their own business. At the same time we want them to take responsibility for that as well and not just party the whole time. They need to know when to party and when to sit down and study.

My studies have been paid for where hubby had to pay for his own but his brother and sister had theirs paid. We will make her get her own study loan, which we will pay unless she decides just to stop halfway through or not pass subjects (due too her not applying herself.)

If she studies in Auckland I would prefer her to stay at home otherwise we will help pay towards cost but not all of the cost. If it is outside of Auckland due to the course she takes ect we will pay for accomodation. Pocket money we will help with as well as I want her to be able to use her time for studies.

But having the loan in her name, means if she decides to bugger up that it will be on her to pay back. Aint we just really mean?

My lovely Dad (Poppa) has money in a trust for educational purposes, also means if he's not around in 20 years the kids will be able to pay for fees.
If they want to go to Massey they can stay home for free, however if they want to go away for study, we'll help if we can but will be up to them to find a way to pay for living costs.

I'm with you Arohanui. I see too many kids being given everything - cars (and the associated running costs), education, spending money, etc and I don't believe it's teaching them the value of money. Even if we had the financial means to do so I don't think I would. And if you do it for one child you really have to make sure they're all treated fairly

I know people who've charged their children board and put it in a savings account then given it back to them when they move out. I'd love to have had a landlord that would do that!

We will support our children by not charging board while studying but if they had to move away to study I'd probably contribute to some living costs.
