Topic: This earthquake stuff Posted: 09 October 2008 at 10:49pm |
Growing up in South Australia, earthquakes and how to survive them just aren't on the curriculum or TV ads etc, so it's all a bit of a novelty for me. I was pretty at that Aftershock program on TV3 last night! And today I've been rustling up an emergency kit which has DH highly amused although he's humouring me pretty well.
So how many of you 'real' kiwis have emergency kits ready and waiting for if 'the big one' hits? Do you have plans for what you and your family would do etc?

No, nothing here, mostly becasue of living in Aklnd I think. Our main issue would be a volcano, and all you can do with that is hunker down inside till it stops. Or it would be so massive that we would all die Mt Vesuvius style and be none the wiser.

We always have an emergency type kit- first aid, 2 of those special emergency blankets, some bottled water, tinned food and a few packets of dry food. Probably enough to last us about a week if need be. We don't really have a 'plan' as such but Charlotte knows what to do in an earthquake and we've also talked about what to do if theres a fire.
DH thinks I'm a bit weird too We never had anything like that growing up but I think my Grandma may have.

We're in the process of putting one together, but because we're keen trampers, we always had most of the componants in our 'tramping cupboard' anyway (torches, batteries, first aid, etc). I always keep bottles of water as well, just in case.
We're in Hamilton, so we don't even get a volcano to worry about I'm not sure what kind of disaster we're ever likely to face, but I figure an emergency kit isn't a big deal to have, just in case.

I make sure the pantry is always stocked with staples, after the 2004 floods when we didn't have anything in the cupboards, as we'd been away all weekend and hadn't been to the supermarket and couldn't get to town. We didn't have running water for 24 hours that was scary. Luckily Ohakea was close by and DHs work, so I could have a wash.
We are on a hill here in Feilding so our house is protected, its being without drinking water that is the problem, most schools were closed for a week cause they didn't have drinking water or the sewerage system wasn't working.

We don't have one. It's one of those "I should do that one of these days" things
DH scoffs whenever I talk about it. I have, however, made a little emergency kit for Hannah.
A few days supply of nappies, food, water, clothes, blanket etc..
But for some reason DH just thinks it's silly to have one "just sitting there, doing nothing" for us.
Maybe I should just do it.
You never know, I guess.

I keep meaning to do it. It's quite pricey when you start from scratch though. I think that earthquake movie got alot of people thinking which has to be a good thing.
We get quite a few small quakes in Palmy. Just the other night I was typing away and my chair starts to sway (and no, it was not because of the size of me a*s lol). Guess i'm just starting to get used to them.

Same here. DH is always going on about though so I guess I better put something together. We used to have a weeks supply of water (enough for washing, cooking and drinking) but when we moved we tipped it all out and we've been meaning to start again from scratch ever since (we moved on 16/11/2006).
We do have plans in place and have done for a long time. The most important thing for us is to get the family back together if a disaster strike. DH and I both work in town but we work different hours (with a 2hour overlap) so chances are one of us will be stuck in town (about a days walk from home). We also both work on the waterfront so we have plans to head for the hills (incase of a Tsunami) and then make our way home from there. The thing that freaks me out the most is that a disaster might strike when DH and I are both in town and Michaela's at home in the care of my elderly MIL.
Oh and (although I'm an upstanding citizen that's never been in trouble with the law and never intends to be either) if it comes to it I will have no qualms looting (infact I might stop at kathmandu and get myself a nice pair of hiking boots for the trek home just kidding, I have sneakers at work). But realistically my main focus is to get back to my family and to keep my family safe and well, the stores can claim any lost/damaged/stolen property on their insurance.

We have an emergency kit that has everything from food - to a first aid kit and even a gas cooker and spare cylinders
Although people think that living in Auckland is safe due to not having earthquakes... it's not!! If there is a huge earthquake in the white island region it could trigger every single volcano in NZ and then we'd be screwed just as much as everyone else

I know that where I live I am at a big risk or the mountain blowing and earthquakes. We don't have anything packed up as such but I always have bottles of water in the fridge and we have the staples in the cupboards. But where we live we would have the army to help us (well I would hope so), but with that means that I am by myself with the boys if anything was to happen. I think that if the alert on the mountain was raised I would then probably go and get some more stuff and put it in the garage.

nup. that movie was interestin though. to me, it seemed as if it was entirely WHERE you were that made a differnce, rather than how prepared you were - TBH. We don't have a plan though and we should I think.
We DO have a fire plan though. Jake instigated it (something from daycare)....the boys love to practice climbing through the windows.
Bit put off going to wellington...

We've got only a very basic 'kit' , torch, spare batteries, canned food, blankets etc but it's not all in the same place due to the crappy storage in our house...Im considering getting a plastic storage container to put it in so it's all together and doesn't get used. The only thing is the bottled water - DF keeps grabbing it and taking it to work to drink!!!
Also we don't have a cooker just the BBQ, can't really justify buying one yet either although we will once we have kids as we plan to take them camping..not holiday camp camping either but D.O.C park camping LOL as we both did it when we were younger.

Thats like us. Maybe it'll rain so hard that the bridges will all fall down and then flood the city.
We have a first aid kit on the frigde in a clip container its always stocked with plasters bandages and savlon oh and billions of half open packets of panadol. I also have some 3 litre botlles of water in the freezer but thats about it.
What do you do if something like that happened and you run out of clean nappy's???? just let them run around naked.

We have absolutley nothing prepared at all. I dont even have a torch You'd think after the last few times we have lost power I would have it sorted - but no. Wr do have a bit of food and water packed in the pantry, my house is in no danger of colapsing so I think I would have time to gather a few extra things.
I had no idea they were doing any of this aftershock, so whe I changed the channel last night to a breaking news buletin it had me slightly worried for a few minute. Then just seroiusly confused. Even DH had to look up stuff to make sure it wasnt real

No we don't have anything per se although we always have tins in the cupboard. One thing they didn't mention thoug was if you are at home to use whats in the freezer/fridge too. we never had anything growing up set aside either. However being prepapred does have its limitations as you may not be able to access it regardless of how prepared you are. No idea what the solution is for that.
I thought the movie was very one sided in regard to Wellington yes a big one is comming but they aren't sure where its going to hit if i remmeber correctly the alpine fault is well overdue and that will affect most of the south island i guess at the end of the day it did give you an idea what could happen if it strikes. I would have liked to have seen more about how the rest of the country fared though.

We have a leftover Bird Flu emergency stash - although I'm not sure if panadol and antibacterial tissues will be much help in a natural disaster!

We have a couple of emergency kits - Its just DH and I at the moment so they are pretty basic. I'll probably look at changing them when we have kids.
A small one we keep in the boot of our car: toilet paper, bottled water, torch, a couple of cans of food with the lift up tabs, blanket, and a first aid kit.
And a larger one in our house that contains: change of clothes, first aid kit, bottled water, canned food and dried fruit, lighter, small radio with spare batteries, small portable camping gas cooker with a gas can thing, toilet paper, sleeping bags, tampons (you never know?) and a USB drive that contains scanned copies of our birth certificates, passports, marriage certificate photos and banking details.
Okay it sounds like I'm a freak but when we lived in Melbourne they kept showing these climate change programmes with digital senarios and NZ always got taken out by a major tidal wave. I live in ChCh on the east coast. DH thinks I'm crazy but if we need to use it then its all there ready to grab and go.
