Hi ladies.
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the average cost of daycare is for a baby of about 6 or 8 months old?? Just trying to work out how long I'm going to be off work for and how much daycare costs will come out of my salary if I go back to work.

It's probably different in Welly, or even from suburb to suburb, but ours (on the outskirts of Auck) is $60 a day or $235 a week. JJ will be starting there at just over 6 months old (at this stage!).

lol they only just went up too, when we enrolled (at 6 months pg) it was only $55 a day or $220 a week. And that does include all food. Nice to know it's a decent price as well as a great place! (and yay I just had a chat with them and they're happy to use my MCNs)

ETA: nothing like Gizzy prices tho

Well I don't think mine are anything to compare to as we only have one DC here in Waiouru and it is $150 for the week (that is 9 1/2 hours a day too), only thing is we have to provide the food, but they let Josh in with his cloth nappies whish is a big help to us.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Our daycare is $40 per day, not sure how much for a week. That's all food provided, but you have to provide milk and nappies.

Me too, and having no formal qualifications, I would only earn about $350-400 a week and that would be more than half spent on day care.   My rent is $250 a week! And then I have to eat, use power, phone, the list goes on.

Yup I worked out that when I take into account transport as well, I have to work 16 hours to break even (so if I work 20 hours, I only effectively get paid for 4). So only worth it if I go back full time and that seems like a lot of time away from my little guy...

Where are you in Wellington?

I am in Johnsonville, and day cares I have looked at around here range from $200 per week (at one I have been warned away from) to $350 per week for super-fancy.

The one I really want to get into is $250 per week.

The earlier you go on the waitlist the better - you can always take yourself off it if you decide not to return to work, or to delay it.

Melnel - I live central North Shore and have a found a daycare that is $224 per week incl food and nappies. DS starts there next year.

One down the road from us is $280 per week incl food but not nappies.

They seem to vary so much so pays to "shop" around.

Holy ...

I never realized DC was THAT expensive! Like Renee, theres no way in hell I'd ever be able to afford that! I too have no formal qualifications (YET ...im contemplating studying ) so I would totally be at a loss if I was to even consider going back to work.

I get sooo sick of people asking 'When are you going back to work, when does he go to DC? ..What am I planning to do with my life ...' or implying that I'm lazy or 'bludging' because I choose to stay at home with my son (whilst on DPB) ...they don't seem to understand that it is the ONLY way we can really afford to live at the moment. Really the ideal situation would be to work from home, and I have a couple ideas for business etc but I have no idea where to start

ETA: Eeek sorry for the thread-jack ...I just can't believe how ridiculous DC prices are, I could rent a 3 bedroom house out in Waiuku for cheaper than that per week
