There was a bit on the radio when I drove in to work but yeah, it has been quite low-key in comparison to previous years.

Imagine it will be different in the US.

It didn't even cross my mind until I saw this thread!

I think the 10th anniversary will be a big one.

I think over the years a lot of people have become annoyed with the publicity it gets too. Now don't get me wrong, it was a terrible tragedy and a horrible thing the terrorists did, but what America has done since (and before might I add) to tens of thousands of innocent civilians all over the world because it can't keep it's nose out of everyone's business (and oil) is much, much worse. Yet we don't hear about them do we? You should hear some of the stories DH has about what the Americans did in Afghan - the locals hate them more than the Taliban and that's saying something.

Anywho, back on the main topic, haven't heard a single thing today, although I haven't exactly been glued to the TV for a commemoration special or anything.

No I agree with you on the America thing. I actually wanted to go and protest about Britain going into Iraq with them but I couldn't get the Saturday off work (obviously we were still in England at this point, I wasn't going to fly back to protest!)

technically it happened on the 12th here in NZ, I remember waking up on the morning of the 12th to my radio hearing the news.

I'm with you emz, I'm almost in sympathy with the terrorists after all the going on and on about it by the US.

England was under constant attack from the IRA for over 20 years and it never got the same amount of publicity as 911.

Bush used it as an excuse to go into Iraq when it has nothing to do with the Taliban and everything to do with american greed over oil.

The main media stuff will be on tomorrow. There are plenty of conspiracy theorists all over talkback today, they get worse every year!

I was watching some docos on sky last night, could not turn it off, after 8yrs they still have footage I have not seen.

Oh & now they are saying there was a conspiracy theory with bringing down the twin towers & showed footage of what looked like explosions lower down.

I find it hard to believe.
So will be watching more tonight.

Do you remember what you were doing when it happened???? I was BF DS1 & watching sky they were talking about a plane crash. Then went back to bed, got up early with DS1 & was watching it when the planes crashed into the towers, DH was due to fly home from a work trip that day, luckily he was in NZ. But I remember being glued to the TV for updates all day......

I was at work (was still living in the UK at the time) and had been out working on the machine floor and came back to the workshop and one of the guys told me world war 3 had started, then most of us spent the afternoon glued to the radio listening to what was happening and then watched more on the tv when I got home.

The footage of the planes going into the buildings still gives me chills.

My DH has read loads of stuff about the conspiracies, he is convinced the Americans where behind it. I honestly don't think they could be that organised or that intelligent to manage to keep it under wraps properly.

conspiracies etc aside, it was horrible and tragic, as is the unnecessary loss of lives everywhere else around the world .

I was sleeping , and my dad came in and said very somberly ,
" the world trade center has been been flown into and fallen".....
and I said "whats the world trade center ?"
He tried to explain , in the end he put on one of my Friends DVDs , pointed to the world trade centers at the start and said "them " .....

The footage does still give me chills ,whenever I see it , I wonder what was going through the minds of the people on the planes ....and the people who were in the buildings with these big ass planes coming towards them

I was asleep and my flatmate burst into my bedroom yelling 'AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK' I was like "WTF?" and went back to sleep thinking he was just being an idiot..

And yeah an hour or so later I knew what he meant.

DH and I were still living at his parents and he came into the bedroom and said 'someone flew a plane into the World Trade Centre'.... I just went 'Oh yeah' and then rolled over and tried to get another 10minutes sleep.

There's a programme on Prime on Sunday night and I think it's the last voicemail messages from the people in the towers when the planes hit - I think that would be way to sad to watch.

My dad woke me up for work (was still living at home at that stage) and said America is under attack. Didn't beleive him so rolled over. He turned my TV on and showed me what was happening.

I also remember my neighbours were flying back from the UK on the 12th (their time) and were delayed a few days as their flight was going via LA, wasn't a happy time.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I agree Emz and also it annoys me that since then the Americans have pretty much censored the internet in terms of what footage is available. I mean I'm sure they do it all the time but it was very obvious with regards to Sept 11th.

Isn't it funny how the country that boasts 'free speech' etc. often is the worst at censoring themselves and others?

If you're wondering what I mean - A lot of footage that was available is now no longer available as the American Gvt Agencies (not sure which ones) 'politely requested' that people pull footage from their sites. So for example you will see a lot of the planes crashing into the towers but who here has seen the footage of people jumping off the buildings to their deaths to escape the blaze since that actual day?

Not that I'm saying it's something I'd want to watch but just I think it highlights the extreme power the American Gvt. has when it comes to censoring internet content.

Yeah I agree Bobbie - not that any of us could forget those images, but yes a lot of it has been pulled.

I've watched a few doco's about possibilities of controlled explosions as the towers fell too evenly - we'll never know.

I was still living at home, mum woke me up early and we watched it on the news. Then went to school and the whole school spent the whole day glued to TV's watching the news.

DH was on exercise at work when the boss came up and told them and what the possible responsibilities would be for them if it turned into a major war, all the guys just thought it was part of an exercise so they brought a TV out to the field for the guys to watch so they'd believe their bosses.

My cousin was driving his truck through NY on that day and sightseeing etc on his way and because of overloading his family didn't know if he was OK for days. I can't even imagine what it would have been like for the families that actually lost people.

This sounds terrible, but Sept 11th is the reason I met my DH (his mate joined after it and introduced us), the reason why I was able to get married, buy a house and have a family at this stage in life, all because the Americans chose to use it as an excuse to ruin other peoples lives. Crazy when you think about it.

Oh and do you know what the operation is over in Afghan (well was before the Brits took over) - 'Operation Enduring Freedom'. The US is one of the most restricted countries in the world now! Makes me sick whenever I see DH's t-shirts the Americans gave them all because our guys are only over there to clean up the mess.

Sorry rant over! But it is amazing how something you think is over the other side of the world can affect your life so much.

I remember my brother waking us up (truck driver) & telling us to turn on CNN. We watched for ages. Bit freaky has I had tickets booked to the US. I order my brand new (expensive) digital camera on sept 11 & was paranoid I wasn't going to be able to go to the US to use it!

I still went although people were more worried than me about it.

I'll never forget it as my job in the US was a customer service roll based in & out of airports.
