Topic: Boy names help! Posted: 19 January 2010 at 1:02pm |
Not sure where to post this, but just wanted to get people's opinions / votes on the two boy names my DH and I are thinking about....
One is Nikau (pronouced Nee-koh, like the native tree), and the other is Lennon. Thoughts? Which do you prefer for the first name?
TIA!!! :o)

Would Nikau get shortened to Nik as he got older? Its a very NZ name, Lennon of course reminds me of John Lennon so depending on your family name etc. I actually prefer Nikau

I like Lennon.
Similar to my DS's middle name - Lennox
I wonder if people would pronounce Nikau 'Nee-cow'. You could always change the spelling to 'Niko' if you wanted it pronounced 'Nee-koh'...

Hmm I like Nikau, but he would be forever called Knee cow, which would end up annoying the heck out of him when he was older.

We know a Nikau, he was in our plunket group and is now in JJ's room at daycare, they pronounce it properly too (like Nico would be). Nobody mispronounces it although I bet he will have to correct spelling a lot later on (but then I do too, and my name is quite normal!). I love it - strong and masculine and distinctive Lennon doesn't grab me as much.

Oooooooooh tricky one! Both are really unique and very cool in their own ways. I agree with those who have made mention of the mis pronounciation - I would have pronounced it Knee-Cow.
Although I like the name Lennon, I think Nikau is probably my pick of the two.... very Kiwi

OMG thanks for all the replies guys! Yay! So needed help! Now to share the votes with DH....
PS re:pronounciation of Nikau - I'm part-Maori so I'm all about correct pronounciation of Maori words, so I won't mind correcting people! And our last name is British, but people mispronounce that all the time too! Poor kid might end up being being called Nee-Cow Wyne-der instead of Nee-koh Win-der!! ;o)
bext1 - you busted me! Was posting away from our thread so no-one would steal our names! He he... Lol Lol!!
