There is a high possibility that I am going to miscarry this baby. I have had two previous miscarriages prior to DD, one of which was a blighted ovum and took 5wks of excruciating pain to m/c naturally (followed by a further 4wks of bleeding which needed to be medicated in order to stop), one which was a chemical pregnancy, and now potentially this one. I told my GP that if I was to lose it that I would want a D&C done as i'm not prepared to go through another natural m/c to which she supported. So my question is, what can I expect with this procedure? Is it a daystay in hospital or more like an in and out thing? Is it painful? Could I drive home by myself?
I sincerely hope that in discussing this I am not upsetting anyone, I would just like to know (if possible) what to expect if this is to be the outcome of my scan this coming Monday.

I'm so sorry LA - I really hope this baby ends up being a sticky one!
I've only miscarried naturally so dont know about the D&C procedure but if I'd been through what you had I'd also request one.

LA I really hope all ends well and you don't end up needing this info.
I had a D&C with my 1st MC and it was all pretty straight forward went in for a consult first and they talked me through it, and made an appointment for the op, which I think was then next day. Day of the Op DP drove me in and stayed with me while I changed into a hospital gown and took some pills, then I got taken through to the pre-op area and DP had to leave. I was lucky and didn't wait in pre-op long but do be prepared if an emergency comes through obviously they go ahead of you. While in pre-op the surgeron, nurse and Anaesthetist all came and asked me questions/answered my questions and put the lure thingy in my arm. Once they wheeled me through to theatre they put me to sleep and I woke up in post-op not in any pain although they had me pretty doped up. I tink I was only in recovery for maybe a couple of hours max where I think they like to see you eat and drink something before they let you go. They phoned DP and wheeled me down to the entrance to meet him so I didn't have to walk far and I spent the rest of the day in bed sleeping as I was quite groogy and weak so no way would they let you drive home.
I think I was a bit crampy for the next few days but nothing too major.
Sorry that was a bit of a novel, but that is pretty much everything I remember so hopefully it helps.

Oh wow, I had no idea it was a general anaesthetic, I thought i'd be awake throughout the whole thing. I guess I will have to have someone with me then, gosh, I never knew it was such a big ordeal. My scan is Monday like I said, but DH is away out of town Tues, Wed, Thur, so i've already asked the inlaws if they could mind DD, but i'd assummed that the rest I could do on my own, ie. drive home afterwards.
So basically I should put this whole day aside for being in the hospital, and then another day post this for recovery?
I am oddly enough at ease with this happening, which was not the case when I first got news of the possibility of m/c. This or i'm in emotional shutdown.

Hi
I hope things work out and you don't have to go through another mc.
I have had 4 m/c, the first 3 naturally and the last one I had a D&C. The reason for the D&C was that nothing was happening and to be honest I needed it to be over so I could move on. My experience was very similar to Diddi. You definitely won't be allowed to drive yourself home and I think recovery afterwards is different for everyone. My body seemed to bounce back quickly, I had very little bleeding and hardly any cramping.

Okay, thanks Orca. With a near 1yr old to run around after, I think if I can plan for a "recovery day" that would be in everyone's best interest. Of course none of this has been confirmed yet, but i'm mentally preparing myself incase it is. With my first m/c I started spotting at 7wks so the fact that i'm passed this and things appear to be "okay" gives me a little hope, but i'm scared to hold on to that, and I know you can all understand why- the hurt and the devastation is too much time after time (though I think the first one was the most upsetting of all).

With mine I went in to the theatre they out the lure in and a gas mask on me and I was out to it . I was in for 45 min and woke up anothrr 45min later puking violently with truely horrid cramping and a haemorrage. I stayed in recovery for another hour getting anti puke drugs and super strong IV painnreleif and waiting for my blood pressure to stabilise then I was back into the day stay unit for 2hours, assisted to the toilet had a drink and Sammies and then discharged with good pain relief a free wheat bag and a pack if maternity pads.
After that initial haemragge my bleeding had stopped the nextmorning so 24hours later

Thank you for sharing your experience Mucky_Tiger, sounds all a bit horrific! Particularly the vomitting and haemorraging- do you think the vomitting was to do with the general anaesthetic or the pain?

The general, I always puke.
And the haemorrage was just a big chunkof lining as I had built a lot of lining up and they made sure they got all 'tissue' as they called it but didnt worry about some of the lining as they new it would pass naturally with the 'sympathetic cramping' and it did.

Hey LA,
Like the others FX you don't have to go through this.
I have had 2 MC's one was a missed MC and the other a blighted Ovum, just so you know neither of them was there any pressure to have it done straight away - first time I had thought I wanted to wait it out but after about 2 weeks of freeking every time I went to the loo I had a D&C. 2nd time i wanted it ASAP but even then I think I did the consult on the Mon and the op was the Fri, so maybe wait till DH is home.
Both times though the process was fine - the 2nd the worst part was the waiting! Having to be there by 8am, and I didn' get in till 5.15, I was STARVING, and had a killer headache, but the staff were amazing, both times in dealing with the emotions.
First time I was an emotional mess, the 2nd time I knew something wasn't right, and so had already dealt with the emotions before going in - well so I thought but there was still tears.
Feel free to PM me any questions, but you will be fine, and FX your little miracle is just settling in and you won't have to go through it at all xxx

Hi ladies,
I went in for my 12 week scan on Thurdsday all excited only to find out the devastating news that I have had a missed misscarriage 
I would have been 12 weeks 1 day today. They told me that the baby had died at 8 weeks 3 days. I had absolutely no idea, no bleeding or anything.
I am now waiting to go in for a D&C. I do not want to wait for nature to take it's course and I don't think they want me to leave it as it has already been in there for some time.
It's helpful reading the posts of ladies who have had to go through this because I am kind of freaking out and at least now I have some idea of what to expect so thank you for sharing your experiences.
I hope you will be ok lostAmber and wont have to go through this.

It breaks my heart every time I read of another miscarriage, it just feels so unfair. I have just had my 3rd mc and my 2nd d&c last week. Like you, this last one was missed, I went for a scan at 9 weeks only to find it had stopped growing at 5 weeks and 4 days. It is so devastating to be told the news, and I remember feeling quite cheated as of course your symptoms still remain and the nausea, tiredness etc lead you to think everything is fine...
The d&c is short and sweet and you will be fine. They put you to sleep, and what feels about 10 seconds later, you wake up and it's done. They usually only monitor you for an hour or two after, make sure you're feeling ok and can eat and drink, and then you'll get to go home. Usually the bleeding afterwards is lighter than a period and gone after a few days. With all of my mc's my cycle has gone straight back to normal and I have gotten AF 28 days after the d&c or start of a natural mc.
My biggest suggestion though is to look after yourself. Be extra kind to yourself, don't be afraid to be selfish and ask for sleepins, time alone, long hot baths, whatever you want! Give yourself time to grieve, and don't kick yourself if you think you should be over it by now, take as long as you like, it's not just that tiny little baby you are grieving, but the future you had planned.
Hey, and you know what's really cool?? You will get over this! Even if right now it feels like you can't, you will and you will be a stronger, braver person because of it. I think nature gives the hard stuff to the strong people who can hack it

LA if you need a D&C it wont happen the next day... you will have to wait until the next surgery day at the hospital (they are done like normal day surgery so all OB surgery is done on the same day).
you will most definitely need someone to drive you home as it is a GA and i would suggest childcare the following day as well. As a guide, I was given 2 day med cert after mine for the physical side of things (needed more for the emotional recovery).
You are not allowed do heavy lifting, exercise etc for 2 weeks and no sex, bath, swimming until your bleeding has stopped completely. This may vary from women to women.
I sincerely hope you do not need to go through this experience.
I really sorry hun, I had no idea you were having issues with this pregnancy! FX for you.

Fortunately for me things have improved, baby is measuring where it should be now and it's HR is also up. So just 4 more weeks of the first trimester and I can then breathe a little easier. I am definitely more hopeful now however.
