Topic: nappies - help please Posted: 06 November 2006 at 6:54am |
Hello everyone,
I want to start stocking up on some newborn nappies but not sure which brand to buy. Cna you please tell me, from your experience, which would you recommend more - Huggies, Treasures Ultra or another brand. Also how many would you use up in a day and how fast do bubs grow to begin with - I'm trying to make sure I don't stock pile too many. I live in Auckland (in case that makes a difference).

that would be about right as long as your baby wasnt big. Some newborns can only be in newborn nappies for a couple of weeks. I use giggles when they are newborn and didnt spend the money on huggies etc... because you are changing them so often at that age they dont generally pee through them. I would wait till baby is sleeping longer at night then start using the more expensive ones. Personally Im a huggies fan, Treasure dont seem absorbant enough, well they didnt for Kobe anyway.

Am personally a Huggies fan, we went through about 12-13 in a 24hr period initially, although after a wee while our initial stockpile ran out and we had to go get more... I'd say for the newborn size we would have used about 300 or so altogether.

I love Huggies over any other nappy out there that I have tried. Ultras didn't contain any of Andrew's explosions when he was a newborn. Andrew was in just Huggies for the first year of his life - apart from the trial we had with Ultras.
I have got 4 bags of Huggies newborn, a box (108) of Huggies newborn. 4 bags of Ultra newborn (i'm going to try them again - taking them to the hospital so if we have any accidents they can clean the mess up) and 4 bags of Giggles. All up I have about 300 nappies and if I don't use them all I know of someone on here due in June that will have them as a gift from me.
I am also stocking up with the next size now and have 18 bags of different ranges (Huggies, Ultras and Giggles). I also have a box of Crawlers (6-11kgs) Huggies for my little man as well.
With Huggies you can only stock pile in Newborn at the moment, as Iam sure I read that your bubs was shy at the first scan. If you wanted to stock up with the next size up then you can look at Giggles and Ultra.
But remember everyone is different - all thou most of us on here are Huggies lovers I have a few friends that hate Huggies (I have no idea why), so everyone is different.

I used about 10 a day of treasures giggles at first and we went through about 10 packets before Charlotte needed to go up to the next size.
We then moved to Huggies but found she leaked something shocking so we used Treasures Ultra. However, they are so expensive that I tried Pam's brand nappies and honestly, I can't tell the difference between them and the Treasures Ultra - they look and feel very similar and are sometimes a third of the price!

Olivia was 8lb 10oz when she was born and we went through a box of 100 Huggies newborns in 3 weeks (they actually lasted for 4 weeks but I was given a bag of treasures and a couple of samples in my bounty pack). Then she was into infant size. When they get to around the 10lb mark they need to move into the infant size ones and normally they put on that first inital weight gain quite quickly (although that is a general statement and not cold hard fact). What about setting up a "nappy bank" at one of the nappy websites and putting money on it? Me and hubby were going to do that but were too lazy.
Congratulations on bubbah and GL!

Josiah is physically a small child... he was 7lb (3.18kg) at birth, and everything other than the Huggies newborn leaked either from the back or around his legs because they were too big. He's 18mths now, and weighs about 9.5kg... Huggies have been the only ones to consistently fit him well.
On a side note, Kiya was a bit bigger (7lb 13oz/3.54kg) and I used Giggles for her right through - as a single mum, they were the best I could afford and they worked really well. When she was 3.5yo, she was daytime toilet trained but not fully night trained when she broke her arm... we put her back in nappies to make sure the cast stayed dry at night, and the hospital had a couple of Huggies nappies we could use while she was in overnight... Kiya said they felt nicer than the ones we had at home!

Thanks everyone!
Looks like Huggies is the way to go - I'll add some to my shopping today. I think I'll get about 200-250 to be on the safe side as we can always get more if needed (I'll be going back to work fairly quickly so we won't be on one income for long).
Now for the next question - where is it best to buy them from? Supermarkets on special? I generally shop at Foodtown.
PS, Yes, mummy_becks - bubs was shy at the scan so we don't yet know if it's boy/girl but we have another scan booked for 28th so fingers crossed.

We don't have a Countdown near us but we have a New World and Pack n Save. I really only ever shop at Foodtown however - too lazy to go anywhere else as I'm used to the layout really.

The Warehouse also has good deals on Huggies from time to time. I think they had two packets for about $20.

I found foodtown was generally more expensive than the others. Best is to buy them only on special at under $10 a bag for Huggies. You can buy them through website - if you are in Auckland (which I'm sure you said you were) then you usually don't pay on shipping througha number of websites as they are based in Auckland. Have a look around (goggle bulk huggies nappies and see what you get). Supermarkets run their specials Mon - Sun, so the special that was on at countdown has now finished.

I just google-d nappies nz and found those two sites:
www.nappies.co.nz
www.babyonline.co.nz
They both seem to have about 2 boxes of 100 Huggies Newborn nappies selling for around $80.00. That seems pretty good to me - what do you think?
Also are those the 'real' thing - I mean do they look like what you get from supermarkets or are the supermarket ones better? I know that sounds odd - I guess I want to make sure the stuff on the web is not old stock/previous version etc...

Sometimes they will say it is old stock (as in the design on the nappy) they are still the same brand and do the same job.
I have a heap of Huggies nappies left over from Andrew (so glad i'm having another boy) and they are the old design with the Pooh stuff just on the waist band and not all over the nappy. They will still do the same job.

Isla was 8lb 6 (3.82kg) and is rapidly gaining weight, but I tried 2 sample Huggies newborn size nappies on her when she was that weight, and both times they sort of cut into her leg/thigh, like left big marks in her skin after only a short time on. The first time I felt guilty cos I thought it was me putting it on too tight so I was extra careful the second time, and took it off to check after a short time, and it had marked her skin again.
We are using Tresures Giggles in the day and Ultras at night cos they appear to have a better inner leak guard than the giggles, but are way more expensive and we dont have many. Havent tried the giggles at night yet. We havent had any probs with either of them leaking, even tho she poo's almost every nappy change, and sometimes the nappy is very full but no leaks!
Am definatley pleased we stocked up before hand, but we seem to be using soo many!! Like 12- 15 a day at the mo. We brought a few packs of the infant size (4-8kg) Huggies (old style) and I tried them on her yesterday and they fit much better than the newborn size did,..no skin marks! She weighs 4.4kg (9lb 13) today.

We love huggies here as well, they are really fantastic fitting, and don't seem to leak for us. In a pinch, we will use Treasures Uktra, some times i buy the treasures giggles for during the day, but i do find they leak around the legs. it is all trial and error, though. We use a mix of cloth and sposies.
