Topic: cereal or lolly? Posted: 31 January 2007 at 10:26am |
I shouldn't compl;ain really - Lewis' parents went shopping for us and bought heaps of food. we were still in aplmy for the funeral of my grandad (another saga - another post), anyway, they bought the kids some ceral. Pams Honey snaps. I looked at the label and seriously, this craop has 51% sugar!!!! can you believe that they can sell that as cereal and not as a lolly? i bought some lollipops for Jake with less sugar in them than that! i was really appalled so will try and chuck them out soon.

maybe instead of throwing them out you could use them to make some lolly/cake... you know like those rice crunchies...

Have them on ice-cream for dessert. Then the kids can still enjoy it but not instead of real cereal

OMG! I have never eaten that kind of cereal cos I thought it prob was high in sugar but that is a huge percentage of sugar. Its kinda sad cos some people probably think they are being good buying cereal without reading the back.

My Dad has rice bubbles and then usually sprinkles a few fruit loops on top... perhaps you could use them like that???
But yeah... I'm a bit anti-sugar for breakfast cereals. Can't be good for getting through the day at all!
P.S. We were never allowed those things as kids... maybe Honey Puffs as a treat, but not Fruit Loops or Cocoa Pops etc

The sugar content of some cereals is crazy - it's like giving kids cake & ice-cream for b'fast. It's probably even worse and not as yummy! Most of the cereals are so over-processed, there is no goodness in them at all - other than the vitamins/minerals they add after manufacture to make the cereal sound good!
Personally, I don't eat cereal and won't be giving it to my kids either - such a waste of time. Porridge with milk and fruit is healthy; or toast with cheese; eggs etc - but no cereal.

Yeah I did eat things like that as a kid, but it doesn't mean I want my kid to eat them now
That is alot of sugar! Ella gets ricies or weetbix, cornflakes sometimes too. Even ricies have sugar in them, so stupid..She has raisins as a treat, or sometimes tinned peaches.
I like Nikki's idea of sprinkling a few on top though.

i might mix them in with another cereal or something. I find it amazing personally because these kinda things are marketed showing parents how "healthy" they are "good source of energy" kinda things - and then you look at the label . Now i'm not against giving my children a treat once and again, but i would never give my children lollies for breakfast and in my opinion its the same thing! It gets annoying as I know most parents want to feed their children the best and compaines seem to be out to deliberatly misinform us!
as a kid I ate toast usually for breakfast - i rarely had those kinda cereals as they were expensive and we couldn't afford them.

We never had them either - we had toast, or porridge if we were at my Grandparents. We got a bag of cornflakes each fortnight, usually for Mum to bake with though, and occasionally we had ricies - but with 4 kids, whatever we had, they didn't last long at *all*! That sort of thing was very much a treat - and of course there is so much knowledge out there now about the affects of eating that sort of thing too.
Mind you ...whether I'm just a bit AR in my opinions remains to be seen. When my BIL, SIL and niece came up a few weeks ago, my SIL informed us that my niece (almost 9 months at that stage) doesn't eat baby food anymore (would've been nice to know *before* I'd collected jars and jars of the stuff - cereal, veges, desserts ), and then plonked her down with a box of McDonalds chips for dinner, I nearly had heart failure!
I do hope that the kids enjoy their treat though when they have them

that is what I think they are ginger - treats not an everyday item! We had weetbix, cornflakes or ricies (and funnily enough, it is what I have often now as well) or it was toast.
Dh and I have established that we will have the most deprived children in the neighbourhood

yeah that is what i meant - a treat...if they are only given the one box then it isnt likely to be an ongoing thing...
and yeah the mcdonalds thing gets me...all this pc rubbish some people speil off and then they feed the kids crap like that??? Im with SB our kids will be deprived of that kinda rubbish! My pet peeve (lived in sth auckland for too long!) was seeing kids with Coca cola / fanta in their bottles...so of course those kids continue on to have soft drinks all the time too...

ew my kids have water, or milk. allowed 1 drink of juice with dinner that's basically water with a dash of juice for colour.
We do the mcDonalds thing though - not often, but as a treat. I still always feel conscious of people seeing Little miss ayja sittin in the highchair eating it. even more so when she was younger.
The girls get porridge, toast or ricies or weet-bix, with peaches for paris. sometimes we grab one of the treat cereals but it just gets a few sprinkled on the ricies.

Charlotte won't eat cereal at all! Probably doesn't help that I've only ever offered porridge or weetbix, but still. Shes a toast and fruit girl (sometimes crumpets or muffins for a treat). Thankfully most of the 'bad' cereals may contain traces of nuts so I doubt it will ever be an issue.

We only ever had weetbix or porridge, maybe ricies or cornflakes as a treat. My fav cereal once I hit about 10 was all bran, and that was what I ate till I went off it recently. (I made my mother buy it for me back then as she thought it tasted like cardboard!)
What a shame that survey didn't have nutragrain in it - so many of my kids have it because it is touted as a healthy option (with the 'ironman' linking), and it so isn't!

We didn't ever have anything like that as kids, mainly because it was expensive. We had weetbix and/or toast, sometimes we had cornflakes and as a very very special treat rice bubbles... Mind you, I am 32, and I'm sure there wasn't so much american crud on the market then as is now...
