Topic: **MY PUBLIC DECLARATION** Posted: 12 June 2007 at 12:15pm |
OK,
I have decided to put this on here as my own little ramble page and as incentive to keep going I am going to FINALLY quit smoking!!! . My thinking is that good old peer pressure will win out and If I declare it on here I am going to be way to shamed to not do it as I will have to admit to all of you that I failed.
My quit date is tomorrow, I have the patches the rescue remedy and my little magic pills (courtesy of the herbal lady), and some chewing gum! Any other advise is gratefully accepted! .
My reasons for quitting are:
My health
My children
My long suffering DH
And most importantly because it's a filthy disgusting habit and I don't want my children doing it so need to lead by example!
So roll on tomorrow

As for advise, read the Alan Carr's book it is great. Try to think of what you would do when you had a smoke, was it have a cofee, talk on the phone etc. What to do is put something in your hand while doing this to stop you reaching for the smokes. Rubbish all smoking things ashtray, lighters smoking jacket if you had one tomorrow. Call quitline and get the pack from them it has some helpful stuff in it.
Best of Luck with it, I found the first few days hard but once you get over them you will feel so much better. Also don't worry if a few days after you stop you get a cold and hack up phlem its a good sign things are clearing out.

Apparently Vitamin C helps too with the cravings, although be careful not to overdo it.
All the best! Plus, by quitting, you'll be saving lots of money!!

Fantastic, you go girl! I was watching Downsize Me on tv the other week (it's on Tuesday nights) and they were curbing a smoker's habit with the help of sunflower seeds. I guess anything's worth a go!

Good luck to you!
It's a hard road and it's so worth it! I had trouble quitting but the minute I got pregnant (after smoking half a packet from the shock of the BFP) I stopped altogether and have never looked back! I had tried to quit before but I could never quite kick it completely.
Funnily enough, being pregnant, smoking absolutely repulsed me, and after I got over that, my addiction was gone!
Good luck again!

Good on you!
My mum's a nurse, and she's filled my head with all sorts of statistics about how much your health improves when you quit... for example the day that you stop smoking (ie, straight away!) your risk of a heart attack decreases by 50%, and your risk of stroke decreases by around 30%.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and advise ladies. I have given up before but only lasted 3 months and then got cocky and started again. (Stupid Stupid).
My Oldest is always asking me to give up and told me the other night he was scared I was going to die!! So big wake up call. Also my mother smokes and she sounds horrible she coughs and hacks away all day I wouldn't be surprised if she has the start of emphysema, not nice.
I went down to almost nothing when I was pregnant (not my proudest moments) but went straight back to smoking after having them.
I figure tomorrow is a good day as the boys are hopefully (she gets on her knees and prays) back at school after their various bugs, and Abby is at Pre school until 3-00pm so I can have a me day.
To those that have given up I take my hat off to you
Sunflower seeds what did they do with those?

Well done – you have taken the hardest step!!!
My DH tried unsuccessfully to quite a couple of times, and after smoking for 15years he quite, cold turkey – no patches, no gum, no pills – that was 6 years ago, and he hasn’t touched them since.
How did he do it? Well – he read a book called “How to stop smoking permanently” by Allen Carr. Loads of our friends have quit after reading it as well….so maybe worth a try.
Good Luck!

Good luck Nuttymama! Tis a hard road, but once you get thru the first few weeks it's a piece of cake. I gave up when I was pregnant with Maya, was lucky enough (if you can call it that!) that the smell of cigarettes made me hurl so the thought of actually smoking was even worse!
Willie gave up in January, he did a course of Nicobrevin and he's been smokefree now for 5 months and thats after 40 years of smoking!

Thats aweosme. Good luck!
I gave up once i knew i was pregnant. Of course my ex didnt smoke so i hadnt really been smoking any way, only when i was having a drink. So i found it quite easy. Up until then though i thought id never do it hehe.
I just hope that once i have bubs and finally have a drink again i dont fall back into the habit of having a drink and a smoke.
Enough about me! You know once you've done it you will be really happy you did! I like to think of the money side of it. Think of how much you will save

I just worked it out and we will save on average $2230 a year and $11180 over five years, that's a fair amount of money quite literally going up in smoke .
40 Years well done Willie! And you Emma, my Dad has quit after many failed attempts and 46+ years of smoking so he is my inspiration.
The Name of Alan Carrs book rang a bell and I went hunting in the shed and what did I find his book. I vaguely remember buying it a few years ago and not reading it so I have got it out and have decided this is now my new bible.
I know I'll feel differently tomorrow but I'm kind of getting excited. Will let you know how I'm doing.

Never having done this, I'm not sure how practical it would be but what if you put aside the money you would normally spend on cigarettes and at the end of a set period of time (say, after a month or 3 months or whatever) you could buy yourself a reward for quitting.
Might make for an extra incentive, knowing that there is that savings there for something just for you.
