Topic: Am i wired???? Posted: 01 July 2007 at 9:06pm |
I was just talking to my sister in law and she still can't believe we still do not have a visa card a year ago i payed it off and than canceled it as i was sick of paying it off and buying things we don't need. Every now and then i wish i do but don't miss the repayment means my kids are in famrers clothes and warehouse but they don't mind at all and they don't have every toy out but least we are debt free Am i the only one that doesn't have one?

Nope, I don't have one. If I ever need to pay for something by CC I transfer the cash to my parents and use theirs. I've been meaning to get a Debitplus card from Westpac (like a CC but you can only use available funds) for a while but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Don;t be silly (in a nice way)
Thats great you don't have a visa card. AS you say at least you don't have the debt that too many times goes with a visa card. wish I had as much willpower as you have.
And as for the farmers and warehouse clothes theres nothing wrong with that.

I hate debts. My motto is "If you dont have the money, you cant spend it" Excluding my mortgage(but that is different)its more like a compulsory savings that i can afford. Im not very materialistic & am sometimes called a scrooge..
Oh yea, no your not weird, unless i am too??!? I dont have a credit card either.

I am disgustingly materialistic (the Rampant Consumerism thread is evidence of that!) so if I had a credit card I could get into so much trouble. Without one, I can only spend as much as I can afford, so the kids only get Patch clothes when I've got a bit of spare $$$, otherwise they freeze
Maya never had anything from Patch til she was about three, lived in Warehouse/T and T clothing and it sure never did her any harm!

I don't have one - I'm not very good with money!
DP has one so we use that for online stuff - flights mainly. Sometimes I miss having it but that's only when I want to buy something to cheer me up or something like that. So I don't really need it!

We have a credit card, but mainly for online stuff. am thinking of paying it off and having one of those debit cards that Emma mentioned. Our kids have clothes and toys galore - i have bought...maybe 10% of them. They are only grandkids on my side and only great-grand kids too, so spoilt rotten. hey live in warehouse and farmers clothes - and usually don't look too bad. My one expensive items are osh kosh overalls - they are fabulous and wash so well - but got them for $10 a pair from an outlet store in japan. we are frugal - pretty much cause we have to be. Also, I don't think we need to be spending all our free cash on stuff like that.
we DO have debts like HPS, but only have 2 max at a time, and both are under $12 a week. and one is for the washing machine cause our other blew u. no hp no washing machine.

hehe Ellen- Brae uses the end of a old paint roller & bits of chalk for his gun & bullets & has rolled up news paper as his squash racquet. Amazing imagination when it comes to junk eh? We frequent the op shops and recycle centre & its good we live in a small rural town so its OK to wear gumboots & old knitted pants to town. I do enjoy the odd luxury but feel better with my $ in the bank

Hi Ellen, we don't have a VISA either. The only debt we have (other than mortgage) is a student loan which has just gone under $2,000 and we are saving hard to pay it off this year! We had to strict budget from early on (student income, then on-call income... first permanent job happened 2 months ago ) but it hasn't harmed us. Perhaps we are better off than some because we have a strong appreciation for money but have also had to develop a LOT of self-control. Anyway I think what you are doing with Kaleb is excellent - teaching him about money while he is young and teachable also. We'll be doing something like that when our girls are older (Hannah is only just getting the idea of buying etc now).

I firmly believe that kids don't need a lot of toys! We try to avoid buying Maddie too much and what we do get we try to limit to really good quality items that she will get a lot of use out of.
As a result a lot of her stuff has come from family not from us.
Maddie's favourite toys at the moment are pegs!

We have a credit card but we still operate within our set budget(s) and don't use it for something unless we can pay it off within the month. TBH Erin has a lot of toys, but we are also very lucky in that a fair few have been gifted our bought cheaply / second hand - she is a big peg fan too !

We have one, mainly to pay for things online, like the groceries each fornight.
But then each month when DH gets paid the grocery money gets put on the cc and it's paid off each month. That way we don't get charged the interest.
I also have a farmers card for their card holder sales, again just pay it off when the bill comes. And the times where we have had a HP we've waited until the interest free ones come out!
I'm a major scrouge!!! I definitely control the purse strings in our relationship!! DH wouldn't have a clue how much money is in our accounts!!
But that's not to say we don't have debt. We have two mortgages (hopefully only one soon...........anyone want to buy a 2 bed unit?????? ) and I have a student loan that is the equivilant of a healthy deposit on a house!! Oh, and as of today, no job!!!! SO no income!!!!
