Topic: Newly pregnant Posted: 15 September 2005 at 11:20am |
Hi there,
I have just found out about this website in a womens day magazine, and so far its been great.
I am almost 9weeks pregnant and over the last week have had the most horrible pregnancy sickness, at this stage i havent been able to eat until about dinner time. But after speaking to my midwife she told me not to worry that its normal.
I am not sure what type of pregnancy i am going to have, but the midwife seems to think that if i am not extremely careful then i will have a high risk one.
I am actually having to give up my job as a homecare co ordinator as its too stressful and my bloodpressure and sugar levels are rising, which has the midwife a bit worried.
i am 31 yrs old, and this is our first baby, and after having two miscarriages last year i want to do anything and everything to protect myself and baby.
Any tips on food and nutrition would be welcome.
Thanks for listening to me waffle on.
Katrina

Hi Katrina...Welcome to Ohbaby and congratulations!
I am 27, live in Auckland and expecting our first baby at the end of October. Still working!!!
I am also member of the high risk pregnancy team...trust me it is not at all bad (you get regular check ups and scans to make sure the baby is fine..and that is great). I had high blood pressure before I got pregnant but since have been perfect! I also have a history of family diabetes but so far I am doing well.
I had no morning sickness but had three bleeding scares. I am also very paranoid and eat selective things....
I dont eat the usual ...deli meat, soft cheese, prepacked salad, raw or smoked stuff etc...other than that eat the normal food (what ever you can keep down)! You could always take vitamin tablets (cant remember the name)...specially for pregnancy!
Other than that just rest and take care of yourself ...and remember...no question is a stupid question...specially here! I have asked my share of stupid questions.....

Thanks everyone,
You have all made me feel very welcome.
I am in wellington Lower Hutt to be excat.
Something else that makes this pregnancy a bit more difficult is that 8mths ago i had a gastric bypass whiched enabled me to lose 58kgs.
So i dont eat much to start with but now i have to be extra careful to make sure i eat little and often.
I am so excited to be a mum but scared at the same time which i suppose is normal.
anyway thanks once again for making me feel welcome
Katrina

I thought I'd posted a message earlier, but I can't have!! Welcome Katrina I'm Clare, and I'm in Auckland. I work in Events and Promotions Management for a distribution company. I'm just a newbie too, but this site is great! I've been suffering terribly with morning sickness, and have been harassing the girls online to share their remedies with me. Well girls, I am pleased to say I have not been sick for two days!! Still a little nausea, but nothing like before. And I think the life saving remedy was Pregnacare vitamins. AMAZING!!! I could recommend it soooooooooo highly!! I'm so happy!!! Now that I don't feel so sick I can actually start getting excited about the prospect of being a mummy!!! Oh, Ana - your wee man is gorgeous!

Hi Katrina. There's a heap of info out there about good eating... make sure you ask your miwfe and she can give you alot of help and info as well.... by the time you actually have baby, you will have shopping bags full of pamphlets booklets and information sheets.... lol.
for the morning sickness, flat lemonade is good, eat little and often, and also ginger nuts and ginger stuff also helps some people. some people say it can be made worse because your body is using more energy and so overnight, since you don't eat, when you wake in the morning your body is so seriously lacking energy that you get sick... kinda like a diabetic does if they don't have the right stuff and get really low blood sugar. sooo... following that, that's why there's the theory that you can have tea and maybe some dry toast or something before you get up (the perfect excuse to get hubby to get you brekkie in bed...) then sit there for half an hour or so and relax to let it kick in... and you should be good to go... (well, it works for some.)
take care of yourself, put your feet up and rest as much as you can.. good luck for the rest of the pregnancy.

hi katrina! you'll have to add your name to our due date list. In my first pregnancy I actually lost 10kg from eating really well for once in my life. Lots of fruit and veges, anythingyou can keep down. I found the smell of grease made me feel illl which was quite helpful actually. I also had a problem with lack of iron which I'm feeling again. I take iron supplements which are great but can make one feel a little "backed up" so I'm tryin to eat lots of fruit to help that. Little and often is a great idea, especially as as you get bigger your stomach gets smaller so you feel soooo uncomfortable if you eat too much.

Hi Katrina
I also had gastric bypass surgery 15 months ago and I lost 62kgs I can eat fairly normally now, like small meals, definately more than I could eat before, as I'm sure you know what I mean.
My husband and I have been trying for our first baby, this is only our third month trying because my surgeon said we had to wait a year before trying to give my body time to heal and to let my weight stabalise. I am hoping that my weight loss has increased my chances of getting pregnant because we were trying for quite a while before surgery and the only thing we could put it down to was my weight so that was the main reason I had surgery along with many other reasons. After knowing everything I know now about the surgery I would still do it all over again, it was the best thing I ever did and don't regret it for a second.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope you really enjoy as I'm sure you will.
Helen
