hi everyone was just wondering if there are any mums of prems out there who had their bubs in hospital for awhile. Reading through this site and about everyones amazing birth experiences has shown me just how different it is for a mum of a prem (or sick bubba) and just quietly feel a little jealous of not having my birthing experience like that. not that i would change it as my boys needed to be in hospital but i have finally realised how traumatic the experience was for me. At the time of the boys birth i was really quite numb. i mean after having them they were briefly placed on me which i can barely remember then whisked away on the hot dog incubators by the pediatricans and i didnt even go to see them for 3 and a half hrs after they were born. then they had needles in them and splits and breathing tubes up their noses etc. they are 2 now and i went to see the staff at neonats (we were there for 8 1/2 weeks) and i swear it just felt like it had only been a year since i had been there - the memories were really fresh. i look at the boys and marvel at how far they have come but i do think i havent really coped with their birth as well as i thought. anyway anyone oyt there feel the same or know where i am coming from?

I haven't been through it myself but my neice was born at 28 weeks, and I watched my sister go through this and I don't know how she did it. And for you to have two early it must have been hard.
I was reading in a treasues mag a lady had her baby at I think not sure at 24 or 26 week and she said she morned the pregnancy, not having the big belly and missing out on the birth experience, I guess it's probably the same for you?
By the way those are 2 cute little boys you have there!!
Karen.

i guess i was lucky as i got to have the boys naturally but i really freaked out at the time because i so wasnt ready emotionally to let them come out - you know that feeling of wanting them in cos its the best palce for them. but i used to get frustrated with the silly comments from others when they found out the boys birth weights - i had one woman say "oh that would have been easy for you as your boys together weighted less than my boy!!!"
In the end i had to ask the doc if this was true and he as well as the midwives informed me it is harder to give birth to prems as they dont have the strengh to help you and mentally you are not ready.
It was thoughtless comments like that that really bothered me as not only do you have to listen to mums with their full term bubs in the ward but you have a sick bub and also the feelings of guilt and failure at not keeping bubs where they should be.
Anyway its good to chat to someone who knows how it feels to have all those feelings and to go thru the whole neonat thing for a long period.
just another moan but while i was in hosp with the boys i had a new mum moaning to me about her perfectly healthy new born and how hard done she was as her bub had got something minor like nappy rash. I swear i was close to letting her have it all - she was so wrapped up in her self that she didnt even get that there was a group of neonat mums just sitting there gob smacked ( and she knew all our bubs were in neonats and were going to be for along time)
Anyway good on Caleb (which btw happens to be one of jaidyns middle names but with a K ) for doing so well. We didnt have to have the oxygen bottles but i can imagine how hard it must have been to adapt but in the end we cope aye. Hope all goes well with this bub and you manage to hold on but in saying that also you know that if bubs is early that the care she will get is brilliant. I cant say enuf about the neonat staff that looked after the boys and me too with all my crying sessions. anyway thinking of you

thanks, im having a hormonal moment, ive been really upset and downing myself lately, where did you have you boys?? I was in the neo nats with 1 girl that had her baby prem due to the fact that she couldnt stay off the drugs and alcohol, and her baby doing really well and she just used to sit around like it meant nothig, also when I went into labour @ 26wks with Caleb and since they didnt know my medical cond then thy drug and alcohol teasted me. young solo mum.. must be taking drugs, it was so digradding, then also some older midwives have been talking asking me if i intebd to b/f, which i do, and then they go on about babys that are bottle fed and dont get skin on skin contact are depriced in some way, i kinda lost it last time and said so my son who was prem is deprived because he was prem and spent alot of time in the neo nats he was tube feed and spent 2wks in ICU with no cuddles until 14days old, yaeh, he missed out my arse, hes such a happy well adjusted lil boy, and we have a very srtong bond.. any way sorry to bleat.. its nice when somebody understamds you..

hey no worries i so understand to need to get crap off your chest and like i said as above even thou the boys are 2 now the memories are still so fresh. i had the boys in palmy nth hosp and they were fantastic. i have heard of mums who had there bubs in another hops that i wanted to go to but am glad i didnt as they just dont have the resorces to offer the same support as palmy.
as far as the older midwives go they can be abit too much of the old school and i know its hard when you are young as they are so judgemental. anyway if you need to talk just pm me
take care now and hope you are resting up

hi there,I too have had premmies. in 1995 I gave birth to my now 10yr old daughter at 30wks due to toxemia. She weighed 2lb 13oz and spent 3wks on National Womans Hospital then was transferred to Gisborne Hospital where she spent 3wks.She is doing great and hasn't looked back. Then in 2000 I gave birth to another daughter at 36 wks,she weighed 4lb 11oz and was kicked out of neo-natal as she was too noisy and doing fine i had her early as when I had my 1st daughter by c-section my uterus wasn't formed properly and if I go into labour and try for a vaginal delivery it will be very dangerous. Not that i mind c-sections,i still feel like a "real" mum.I am awake while having them and think its cool as there is no pain and its over so quickly Are there any other mums here who have had c-sections??Just curious

Oh I had a c section, whats wrong with your uterus?? I have a bicorbanate uterus and havnt met a soul with the same prob?? my uterus is heart shaped and divided down the middle, and I have a vaginal septum, which means no no for a natural birth... and i had to go to Auck National for 2weeks with Caleb as I was only 26wks and Palmy hospital only takes them from 28wks, I didnt have Caleb in Auck I came bk here at 28wks and had him by Csection at 31wks, The staff in the palmy neo nats are so great and I wouldnt have wanted to have him anywhere else

Having my daughter so early apparently my uterus hadnt hardened up properly so now it will always be paper thin and if i go into labour it is likely to rupture
I had no idea that there were so many prem babies until i was admitted to National Womans.I was totally shocked.
I think that NZ needs to be more informed so that they can offer support(donations etc)like they do for other charities

Jaidyn weighed 3pd 14oz and Keegan weighed 2pd 12oz. Keegs is still quite small be he makes up for it in his lust for life. Jaidyn is my chubby bubba but hes quite short too.

oh yeah and had the boys at 31 weeks. Just reread what paiges mum said about the mum in the mag being sad about missing out on the preggy belly - well i didnt i had a huge belly with the boys lol. I think had i gone any longer i would have exploded haha. I missed the whole bonding with bub and having them with you thing when they were born.

Hey mumstheword - you have 7 weeks to go!!! How is it going? Hope bubs is doing well and you too.

I love seeing premmies surpass all expectations!

My bother was born at 26.5 weeks, and is now a healthy 12 year old boy. About the only things now we are sure are a result of his early start to life is his asthma, and one leg is about 2cm shorter than the other.
