Topic: Tomatoes... Posted: 01 November 2005 at 9:26am |
Well when the MIL was here over labour weekend we were having lunch and my partner gave Arna (16months) a slice of tomato and since then she has rung up and said not to give her tomato again as it is very bad for her...
Is this true? Tried ringing Plunket and couldnt get through...
and if she was so worried why didn't she say something when Arna had the tomato???
Thanks!

I'm not an expert, but I can't see what would be wrong with tomato! It's full of vitamin c, and quite frankly if she likes it, then GREAT!!
But thats just my opinion.....

Thats what i was thinking too - was talking to my neighbour who has just had a little boy (and is also a teacher) and she said 100's of years ago they ate of lead plates and the tomato acid reacted with the lead and poisoned anyone who ate them... But who has lead plates now??...
Will try plunket again...

Be sure to post Plunket's response - I'm really interested in knowing what they say. Just thinking of all the tomato based foods I give my step children - spaghetti bolognese, tomato sauce, lasagne, curries.... they're still alive and very healthy!!

It might have been because I think tomatoes are a high allergy food?

Tomatoes usually only cause allergies when consumed in very high quantities. I get hives if I eat too many strawberries or tomatoes because of the high acid content.
Maya scoffs tomatoes like they're going out of fashion, and her dietician seems happy with that. I'm just glad to see her eating more vegetables - for a long time it was broccoli and cooked carrot every night, now she eats raw carrot, capsicum, tomato, cucmber...

Ok rang Plunket and this is the damage...
Firstly I baffled the Plunket Nurse as she had never heard that Tomatoes are "bad" for children...
Guideline to feeding Tomatoes...
- If over 12 months then they are allowed tomatoes
- Watch if there is a family allergy to them (hives etc)
- If given too much (about 2 tomatoes in one sitting - depending on child) will cause upset stomach (diarohea sp?)
MIL also gives Arna STRAIGHT orange juice (the Keri juice) - this has caused her to have an upset tummy - told this to the Plunket Nurse and she laughed! - Orange juice should be diluted 2 tbsp OJ to 100mls of water. And also orange juice is more acidic then tomatoes...
So in conclusion - Tomatoes in moderation - Plunket said that they promote healthy eating (fruit and veges) and tomatoes is on that list of healthy food.
Hope I havent confused this at all!!

i don't know, but perhaps your mother in law is allergic to tomartoes herself, or doesn't like them???? i think if your daughter enjoys them and isn't allergic then give them to her, i loved tomartoes when i was a kid and still do......

*Update*
Well since the MIL came down on Labour weekend I have talked her her twice - once on MSN when I had to wait 10 mins for her to talk to me so I bit the bullet and started talking to her first - didn't bring up ANYTHING about the tomatoes so I am a bit lost there, and the 2nd was in the weekend when David's sister had a bit of an argument with her hubby and all we were told via text was that "something is wrong can you please text me back" - and couldnt get in touch so rung the MIL and didn't say anything again...
David said he never had tomatoes as a kid - and yet the MIL brought them on Labour weekend - so if she didn't like them / is allergic she wouldn't have brought them right??
So as far as I am concerned the MIL has some other issue with me and is not telling me so I am going to let it slide until she has the guts to tell me!! Hehe
BTW - Arna had Tomato yesterday for lunch (with cucumber, raisins, ham etc) and absolutley LOVED it

I have to say I have a very dysfunctional in - law family!!
They always want to know whats happening with us (Arna, our relationship, what we are doing for the weekend etc) But if we ask the MIL or the Sis-IL anything like that they say "oh not much" or "nah we are fine" and get shut up really..
Reason I said that is the Sis-IL has fertility problems and we are use to getting texts the day AFTER from the FIL or someone else saying that the Sis-IL was in hospital for bleeding, sore tummy etc - However in the weekend the FIL got a text from my Sis-IL hubby saying "Can you ring me when you get this, it's about Sis-IL" - so the FIL tried ringing but both phones were off and no-one was answering the home phone so he thought they were at the hospital.. Rang me at 7am (on a saturday morning!) asking me to ring the MIL to see what was going on... Long story short they had a "drunken argument" which the MIL thought that they would seperate... they are still together and all sorted...
Ok that totally went off the tomato topic but I am SO over the In Laws ... and they think they are looking after Arna before we move and helping me unpack.. I DONT THINK SO!

I'm so lucky with inlaws, apart from a couple of dodgy cousin-in-laws, Willie's family are great. His sisters are really cool, and his only surviving brother, they are like a family to me since my family are all overseas.

I get on really well with my inlaws. Nathaniel's mum is wonderful! On the other hand, if there is going to be a problem, it probably was caused by Nathaniel's MIL...

LOL I wish I was like my Mum, she is such an angel. Unfortunately I am a bossy, know-it-all independent, stubborn pain in the a** like my dad. And Maya is looking to be just like me...
