Gabrielle has high sleep needs and at 13mths still has 2 naps a day, often both are 2 hours or more. Here is her schedule:

7am (ish) up, eat, play
9.30am (ish) sleep
11.30am up, eat, play etc
3.30pm (ish) sleep.

If left to her own devices, she will often sleep from 3.30 to 6.30 (or even later!) but then by the time we do dinner, bath etc it is 8pm before she is in bed. Ideally I'd like her to get to bed earlier as if she goes down at 8 she seems to wake ealier.

She isn't ready for 1 nap yet so what do I do in the meantime, should I wake her each day at 5.30 for dinner etc?? I feel sooooooooo mean waking her but if I don't she is often still asleep at 9.30pm!

Would she go down a bit earlier in the afternoon? Her routine is similar to Ashleigh's except her morning sleep is only an hour or so. And she has her afternoon sleep at 2 for normally 1.5 hrs and goes to bed at 7. If not, then yes I would definately wake her

No advice but WOW! what a great sleeper!
Gina has 2 naps (morning & afternoon) and we are lucky if they last over an hour - this afternoon she only slept for 30min!

put her down earlier than 3.30....
or maybe she is ready for one nap, and is thinking her second nap is bed time.? you could try one nap - she may just make it a good long one.

The only problem with one nap is that she definately can't stay up any longer first thing. She is often back into bed within 2 hours first thing & 2.5 hours up is her absolute limit. Similarly in the afternoon she gets zonked and needs another sleep.

If we stay home in the afternoon, she go down after 3 hours. If we are out, she turns into a grizzle monster after 2.5 hours but then when we get home she is sooooooooo happy and we have heaps of fun hence she ends up going down closer to 3.30. I guess I could cut the fun and games short and put her down earlier.

The other thing is that she doesn't last much more than 1.5 hours after her last nap before getting super grizzly and needing to go to bed.

It will all even out I'm sure.

P.S I'm not complaining about her sleep! I love the fact she sleeps lots, just not sure how to manage it right now. It can be very restricting as she doesn't cope well with outings that are longer than 2 horus but at least it enables me to do my work and keep organised.

Hi, Briona at 17mos was sleeping from 8.30-10 and then 12-3 or something like that I can't quite remember. And down for bed at 6.30pm (dinner at 5.30). So I wouldn't say that "high sleep needs", but remember all kiddies are different.

Anyway to answer your question, I was going to say what KH25 did. See if you can get the afternoon sleep a bit earlier (3, then 2.30), otherwise yea wake her for dinner and after a few days she'll probably get into routine nicely.

Oh one other thing, sometimes on the days she goes to my MILs she ends up being up for 3 hours first thing and then gets so tired she only sleeps for 20mins and is then for the rest of the day so keeping to her short awake times is definately the best plan

She doesn't sleep very well at MILs at the mo...she did for the first few weeks but only does short naps there at the mo which means she sleeps even longer on the days when she is home.

I would probably say wake her. With both our girls around this age we went for the 2 sleeps a day until they weaned themselves down to one (partially instigated by daycare)

they would wake around 7, go back to bed about 9.30/10 am, wake again after an hour. have play and lunch around 12 and be down back in bed by 1pm/1.30 at the latest. We would then wake them, as a rule, at 3.30 pm if they hadn't already woken, 4 at the very latest if we knew thay hadn't gone to sleep till later... otherwise it made the nights very long and disorganised.

5/5.30 was dinner, bath after that, bottle/bf then bed at 6.30.. by then, they had been up for around 3 hours or just over, and yes they had shorter day sleeps, but made up for it by having a good routine that has carried on.. they still go to bed at 7pm now, both of them. once they went to 1 day sleep we moved the lunch forward, usually lunch was 11/11.30ish, and in bed by 12/12.30 depending on when they woke. Still staying with the 3.30pm wake up time if they hadn't woken themselves.

We still do that now.

Hannah was sleeping that much around then too, except I would put her down earlier in the afternoon so she still went to bed at 6.30/7pm.

If its working for you to go down at 3.30, I would definitely wake her at 5.30 so she is in bed for the night at a reasonable hour. The nicest way to wake them up is to open the curtains a bit and then leave them to wake themselves. If its taking ages, pull the covers back a bit! Han always wakes up in a better mood if she thinks she has woken herself up.
