I signed both my kids up under my GP... you probably should only need to see a peadiatrician if there is something going on. Initially, your midwife will do some home visits, and she should refer you to Plunket and to your doctor at about 6 weeks.

In Germany it is normal to go to a Paedeatrician (sp?) instead of a GP with kids until they are about 12!! I think it is great!!
Anyway, we only had to see a paed with Joeys blood in poos saga. We just saw one at the hospital and she was fantastic!

yeah the majority of us mums just go thru plunket (im guessing)and theres also PAFT which come monthly to do developmental checks and give u ideas on learning toys etc.enrol before u r due or before babes 4 mnths old if u were wnting to go thru PAFT tho.PAFT stands for parents as first teachers.
As others have said,in NZ u only go to a paed. if sumthing wrong with babe(ie premmie?,other health issues of concern etc etc)
Harmony went to paed. cos she had clicky hips and a heart murmur.we have been refererred to orthopeadics for her hips tho and go back to paed. at 12 mnths old to recheck her heart.Fun times LOL

if you can get into PAFT it is fantastic. Have had the boys with them from 4mths and they just love Sharon our PAFT lady here. We had a great lady in palmy too. I think her name was Yvonne. And they send you the reports after each visit so its another great journal of their milestones as well as they give you information appropriate to bubs age with things you can do. And the learning toy ideas are great and they use things you can use from the home so it doesnt cost you any money.

Having a good GP is so important with kids. I did the whole random doctor thing for years, but when I was preg with Maya I started going to the health clinic at our local Marae and the two GPs there were awesome. They've looked after Maya since day 1, thre all her allergies, hospital etc. so they really have a complete history going on with us.
