Topic: Dummies Posted: 30 November 2005 at 9:29am |
I know we were kind of talking about dummies not that long ago but I am having trouble with Hannah and her dummy. Initially she only using it when she is up to settle her when she starts to get tired (or if we are out in public!), then she would settle herself to sleep after about 10 mins or so. Now she screams blue murder when she is put down during the day (shes ok at night and doesnt need it which is a start I suppose!) and doesnt nap well. I usually leave her if I know everything is ok but go in after about 10 mins and give her a cuddle - she makes out like she is hungry but if I try feeding her she just plays around and falls asleep. She just wants to suck, hence the dummy, but if I give it to her in bed she wakes up and screams when it falls out. Have tried pulling it out before she goes in to a deep sleep with moderate success, but she still often wakes up not long after.
I really want her to be able to settle herself to sleep - which she was doing - but she gets into such a state she wouldnt sleep anyway. Maybe she is just trying me out! Anyway, sorry for the long post, but any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Aimee, because you have just found out that Hannah has a dairy allergy, I am wondering if anyone has told you about the protein coming through your BM. This can cause the children to be quite uncomfortable. Sometimes its just a matter of cutting out obvious dairy from your diet and sometimes you have to cut everything with dairy added out. It takes about a week to 10 days of going totally dairy free to see a difference in children. If you do decide to try it and it does work for you then i would suggest going to a dietician to see about calcium suppliments etc.
Sorry that was a little off the old dummy track but from what you are describing i think it may be this.

re the dummy - i saw something on tv the other week (think it was tv anyway) that said up to 6 months a baby can be taken off a dummy without any worries, after that they start to get attached as a comforter and it can be harder to get rid of them.
my other thought may be that bub isnt tired or is too tired when you are putting her down. i know if toby is too tired he wont settle and has very little sleep when he does eventually nod off

Aimee I didn't want Joey to get too attached to a dummy either but in the end I decided it was worth it to be more sane and that I would deal with weaning him off it when the time comes.... I give it to him to settle him when he goes to sleep as he is definitely a comfort sucker and he usually falls asleep in about 5 minutes (I leave him to cry when it falls out or if I am having a bad day just keep going in to put it back in ) he usually sucks his hands now when he loses it so thats great too.
About the b/f and dairy allergy thing if you do cut it out it could take longer than 10 days to kick in. In my experience it took 2 weeks for it to be gone.

lol Ana, I have basically come to the same conclusion re the dummy and sanity! So far today I have given her the dummy to settle her and put her to bed, then very, very slowly eased the dummy out of her mouth and she has stayed asleep - fingers crossed. I dont mind doing it so much during the day, luckily she just goes straight back to sleep in the night. And yep, we'll cross the dummy weaning bridge when we come to it as well!
Re the dairy allergy, the doc said leave it for a few weeks and see how things go before we think about cutting out my dairy.

Jake used a dummy, despite us saying we wouldn't...lol. Anyway, he weaned himself at about 7 months. Just would suck quickly and spit it out, then go to sleep. Don't worry too much about it...go with what is good for you.
Also, jake's teeth are fine, beautiful and straight

Argh! Back to this topic again
Hannah has been sleeping really well and I had mamaged to almost eliminate the dummy. She went for all her daytime naps without it and only a couple of minutes crying. same at night time but she would cry for a bit longer. Anyway for some reason she is now waking at about 5am (was sleeping 7 til 7) and the second I put the dummy in she is fast asleep. Sometimes she will keep crying out when it falls out. Have tried leaving her to self-settle but at that time all I want is to go back to sleep and I cave in and give it to her. Now she wants it during the day again too!!
I know I can get her to not use it to get to sleep during the day again but its the 5am waking that is the main prob. She has started to suck her hand but I wrap her for sleeps so she cant settle like that either.
Once I have her off it during the day again do you think I should just leave her in the night (once I've checked that shes ok) to put herself back to sleep?
Sorry for the long post. Any advice would be great cos Ifeel like we are going backwards in the sleep department

have you thought of wrapping her so that her hand is out? just when you think you have it sorted, they go and change on you and all we can do is adapt and start all over again.. what works for a while won't necessarily work forever, sadly. You may not want to but you could try introducing a cuddly.. sounds icky but both my girls took to cuddling up with their cuddlies and would suck away on the cuddlies arm or ear... of course makes ure it's a safe one that doesn't have bits that could come loose, or long fur... nothing worse than a kid with hairballs, lolol. That's about all i can think of right now.
totally off subject really, kinda... anyway. speaking of comfort suckers... Ayja is WEIRD!!! now, i dunno if it's normal, but both my girls had/have a fascination for tickets/tags, you know the white ones on every soft toy's bottom. i never cut them off like most probably do so maybe i am alone in this, but Ayja is just crazy, you put a bib on her and she knows exactly where the tag on it is (even though it's underneath) and will bring it up to suck in her mouth. she will not even take it out long enough to have food put in there. she automatically turns all toys over to find the tag to suck on, and even paris, stil has her tag on her bunny cuddly, and she runs that between two of her fingers to lull herself to sleep.
Anyway, ayja has now started to do weird sucking things like she's sucking her tongue, if she even SEES and tag, or if shes sitting playing with a toy, flicking the tag back and forth, she will suck her tongue at the same time... like she's just thinking about if she had that tag in her mouth. It seriously weirds me out! she does the same when sitting on my knee, if she's facing me she will face dive put her head on my chest and do the sucking thing then too. she does it when she's going to sleep as well, even if there is nothing near her mouth - i seriously wonder if maybe she SHOULD have had a dummy - definately too late to introduce one now, have gone so long without and don't want to go thru the weaning thing like we had to with paris. Crazy child.

oooh hang on a minute, also had a thought that since she is around 3 months now she might be going through a growth spurt... have you tried feeding her at 5 am when she wakes, then putting her back down? might do the trick ... depends how long it carries on for though... Ayja used to sleep through but now doesn't.. sometimes they might just need more to drink.

My 2yo nephew is a tagger... he doesn't suck them, but he holds them while he sucks his thumb. He calls them "sinkins" cause the first ones were on his singlets. Its the funniest thing to see him when he's tired, he walks around sucking his thumb with his other hand reaching to the tag on the back of his shirt!

Im starting to think I wont bother with giving Brooke her dummy.she not to fussed on it most time anyway.Apparently its great when they find thier thumbs.my friend kept putting her little boys thumb in his mouth at bout 8wks and never ever needed the dummy again. My brother inlaw is a dentist and his son Liam has always been a thumb sucker so cant be too bad for his teeth.(Liam is 9 now though and still sucks it)that not great...think they working on that now

Han was always a tag sucker. Most of the tags on her toys have been sucked to bits and are now threads, or atleast devoid of writing. I really hope they use non toxic stuff on those tags. Mind you, can't be much worse than her dipping her hand in the toilet and sucking off the water or eating dirt out of pot plants or miscellaneous other things I find her eating

Oh, and I meant to second Janine's advice about wrapping with Hannah's hands out. It just means that she has a bit of freedom to grab etc. The only downside (depending on how bit her cot is) that when she does the reflex where she throws out her armss (often while in sleep) she may wake herself up if she hits the side of the cot.
I wrap Han with her arms up around her face so that she can suck them or whatever.
Actually, past tense, used to wrap. Little mongrel is too squirmy now and somehow manages to wriggle out without disturbing her wrappings at all. It's kinda creepy like she's shed her shell or something... anyway, I digress.

ew i know paris started doing that really early on so we stopped wrapping her, scary to think that you wrap then in sucha way that their wrap stays perfect yet they find their way out!
I did the meanest thing this morning... was trying to feed ayja brekkie and that damn tag was in her mouth and i couldn't get her to take it out - you try and pull on it and she bites down and give you the evils.... so, i took off her bib, cut off the tag and put it back on her. she was not happy, but still didn't work - she just took to sucking the bib instead! argh.
