Topic: can you explain the diff? formula... Posted: 25 November 2007 at 4:42pm |
Can anyone explain the difference between casein and whey dominant formulas? What are they?
Kaleb was on S26 Gold stage 1 (whey dominant) and we've just decided to go and try this again as the stage 2 has been majorly constipating him (casein dominant) - could this be because of the difference?
We found Nurture Gold blocked him up really badly too first time round - any users of this formula could you please check to see if it is whey or casein dominant as we're trying to understand the root of his problem!?!

yeah its probably whats causing it.
I know when kobe was born prem the nicu staff put him on a whey dominant formula because the casein dominant ones are harder on thier tummies. But not sure what the actual difference is though. We never swapped to the stage two formula with either child as plunket and the doctor said if they were eating ok and gaining weight there wasnt really a need to.

I think.... as casein is harder to digest it is usually in the hungrier baby formulas, stage 2 formula is still whey based but has more iron in it. Fay is quite picky with meat so it was suggested we change to follow on to ensure she had enough iron intake.
That's my take on it anyway and certainly the case with Karicare, also Follow on has less fat so that they arehungrier for solids IYKWIM

that is strange cause Ella got constipated on s26 gold stage one...but was a dream ever since we went to s26 gold stage 2 - was def noticeable....
was a while before solids kicked in so dont think that was the reason for her being more regular when we switched either.

Kaleb has always had problems with constipation but had started 'going' by himself when he was one stage 1 and eating solids (he only gets fruit and vegetables and now some meat but no baby rice etc.). Then when we changed the formula ('cos we thought we had to) he started to get really blocked up again and ended up with a rectal tear but we perservered because we thought it was just his body getting used to the new one. It's been about 3/4 weeks and he's still pooping this little pebble sized clay like poos and seems really uncomfortable doing so. He's still not getting any rice etc. but we've started giving him more water (thank goodness for hot days since he wouldn't drink it otherwise!)so the only thing I can put it down to is the formula change?!?

oh no....bugger - guess they all react different....remember ella was the one who pooped ike once every 10-12 days so stage 2 to me was a blessing that made her regular....
I do water stage 2 down a bit...cause she demands 5 bottles most days so i give 180 mls and nearly three scoops - say three3/4 filled scoops - plunket suggested it and i have gone with it..not much spilling and a happy bubba....maybe try that for a week and see if it helps? she is also drinking about 100mls of water a day or watered down bubba juice

Might try the 3/4 scoops (at this point we'll try anything!!! so sick of doctors, plunket etc. saying "give him water" "he'll grow out of it"). We too make 180ml bottles for Kaleb but we're lucky if he finishes any of the daytime ones. The first bottle of the day, the one before bed and his dream feed are really the only ones he'll take without a fuss. Babies aye?

I know S26 (stage 1 and onwards) was the one they said not to use with Kobe for that reason and suggested heinz nuture because its whey domanint. Luckily we never had any problems with constipation!

Hmm? We had major problems with Nurture....
I've got both tins (S26 gold stages 1&2) here and says on front that 1 is whey dominant and 2 is casein dominant. From googling I found an article that says casein can be harder on a baby's stomach especially if you change to it too early. Perhaps 6 1/2months was too early for Kaleb

I would say - if the other formula worked, and worked well, then go back to that, it will still take a bit for his body to get used to it again and to get over having had the other harder stuff, but hopefully should be back on track again soon.
