I'll spare you the details, but we have a girl at work who is pretty broke, and so my boss offered to buy a loaf of bread a week for her so that she can have breakfast - in the hope that having food will mean she works a bit better.

Anywho, she opted to buy the expensive stuff (McKenzie Country - $4.50) which was fine, but now, she's taken to buying 2 loaves, so that she has 1 to take home at the weekend (it seems) AND the last one she bought, on the receipt was also a packet of tobacco ($20), papers ($1.20) and a $20 prepay phone card!!

What do you think - should I call her on taking the p*ss?? I'm managing the office, so well within my rights to. The boss has already asked me to speak to her about buying more than what he has offered her. She just seems to constantly take advantage!

(and yes, it's the same one we've had employment problems with, and who we are STILL having employment problems with!)

Yes, definitely!
That is a shocking way to behave when he's doing her a very generous favour!
Maybe if you're uncomfortable with being the one who has to pull her up on something again, you could start with "(Boss's name) asked me to speak to you about....."
Man, it sucks that its so hard to fire people now eh?

I still can't believe that someone would take advantage of a situation like that, especially when the company was shouting a loaf of bread? I mean come on, she obviously smokes why can't she buy food?  Grr

Yip I'd definitely say something if I were you. As you say, your boss has already asked you to & will obviously support you. The original arrangement was a sinlge loaf of bread & she has certainly gone beyond that. What a cheek

I hope you are moving closer to being able to give her her marching orders???

Oops ... my bad, I think. She only bought the loaf of bread with the petty cash, which on its own was a bit on the nose as we'd said one loaf of bread a week, but the sticking point with the rest was that she was able to buy a phone card (I mean, seriously??), and tobacco totalling $40 herself. So why not her own bread?

Did she pay for the whole lot using company funds or just ask for bread to be reimbursed? Tell your boss and let him deal with it. If he wants to manage her out of the organisation he will need to gather evidence.

I would tell her that you'll be deducting the unauthorised purchases from her next pay. I'd also remind her that your boss agreed to 1 loaf of bread a week, not the other add-on's & if she continues to purchase unauthorised things on the work account that she'll be facing disciplinary action. Sounds like she's just trying to see how much she can get away with...

Oh must have posted before you typed that other reply!

Yeah that is pretty rude that she can afford all that other stuff yet can't afford a loaf of bread for breakfast. Maybe quietly let your boss know that she seems to be taking the piss & let him deal with it....

I would be questioning why she can afford to damn well smoke and top up phone but not buy bread...

YES she is taking the piss and taking advantage, your boss is runing a company, not a charity...

i think that your boss was a dill for offering her in the first place and he will have to suffer the consequences and maybe next time just give her $2 from petty cash instead of the amount for fancy bread.

Totally agree but some people's "priorities" are up the whop... She needs to be put back in her place.

Well, yes GandT ...but aside from that!

So, what I did was bite my tounge, but showed the boss the petty cash receipt. He went several shades of red, I can assure you! No one likes being taken for a monkey!!

Actually, I suppose I shouldn't really be posting employment stuff on here should I? Considering how wide the viewership is ...    Just in case!
