Just looking at childproofing the kitchen off with a gate.    There seem to be a few to choose form. Any tips on what to look for?

It depends on the gap (width etc)and what you are attaching it to. Some open and close easier as well. Consumer did a thing on safety gates a while back and they have a list of things to look out for. Like width of gap between bars, do you have to step over a bottom rail, is it easy to open/close with one hand, are there bars at bottom baby can climb up on, etc

Also beware of Trademe, I was looking at a gate which would have cost $120.00 on trademe but I brought it from a shop for $69.00.

yup definitely measure the gap you need to fit.

We're renting out place, and it seems there was some renovations done on the house - and the doorways that were added are a difficult size to match to a gate.

One of the walls is not square with the other (i.e. on a slant) Does that matter or can you adjust the ends of he gates to fit on a diagonal wall?
