Topic: babysitters Posted: 26 January 2006 at 10:07pm |
hey Palmy mums. Does anyone know a good reliable babysitter in the area. I'll be busy with studying and have a few days where Mum is working and such, and would love to have someone to give me a hand if necessary. Am also thinking of putting the two in daycare for a few weeks during teaching sections but thought it might be nice to also have someone come over during the day, maybe once or twice. Would also like to consider all options about daycare vs private caregiver.
thanks

Where abouts in Palmy do you live and what hours are you looking at? My sis lives down thea and is looking for a little bit of spending money, she is great with children and babysits for me when we are both at home together.

I can only really give the daycare side as no-one really babysits for us ever. sounds like a good idea to have the kids spilt between the two if poss simply because a full day at daycare makes it a very long day and i'm very aware of how kids as young as ours shouldn't be put in that sort of "school" type situation all day every day - there's no time to just be them, to relax and just sit.
I do know that there is porse Nanny network here in palmy if you were looking at that - but depends on $$ as they are probably pretty pricey i would dare say.
As for private vs daycare -
daycare gives good social interaction - but also means more sickness and greeblies in general.
daycare can have a more formal programme - lots of different experiences - but also kids can pick up some "unsavoury" behaviours a lot quicker than they maybe would have if not exposed to them 24/7
Private caregivers can cater specifically to your child/ren, they don't usually disrupt routines, kids get to stay in their own house, or in a home like environment. there may not be as high a level of kiddie interaction etc or as many chances or resources for involed learning - but a good caregiver should try and accomodate these things into their plan of care anyway.
i guess the main thing between them is the trust factor - ultimately, you have to trust the people you are leaving your kids with, BUT, in a daycare - there are more people around so less chance of anything "not quite right" happening.
I hope you can find someone to help you out, there's so much to consider.

Jacob is in Kidstart that Bernardos run, it is home based care. They have a "curriculum" and run to your routine, you just drop off and pick up. Jake is LOVING it. There is only a max of 4 kids, and only one under 1 allowed, I think, so both boys could go to same carer. They have to have police checks etc, so it is a good system and they have a teacher visit them once every few weeks, and a progress book and have to go to a bernardos playgroup once a fortnight or month or something. Anhow, big Novel. Wasn't too keen on JJ going to creche with him being so wee, but he loves the one on one with hs carer, and I do as well. he is really happy. it is a bit dear if you don't qualify for subsidy, and we don't but I think it is worth it, its $4.50 an hour, actually probably cheaper than paying a babysitter. They do hourly rate deals with siblings too. Website www.kidstart.org.nz
Good luck!!

Kiya was in Kidstart while I was at Waikato Uni, from 15 months old until she was 2.5. She loved it! She had a couple of wonderful carers, and one not so wonderful (I left specific instructions that were not followed) but its not a problem to change carers if your not happy.
