Topic: Prams - decisions, decisions Posted: 15 February 2008 at 11:45am |
I'm having so much trouble deciding what pram to get for number 2. DD will be just over 3 and she doesn't like to sit in a stroller anymore so I don't need to worry about getting one with a toddler seat.
I really like the Steelcraft Strider, it comes in 3 or 4 wheel. But its about $450 and I don't know if I should be spending that much. Does anyone have one of these?
I also really like the Phil and Teds Sports, but once again don't know if I can't justify spending the money.
There's so many prams out there for around $150-$200, Farmers have some Mothers Choice for $150 but then I don't know how the cheaper models can compare to the more expensive prams.
I keep thinking maybe I should just get a cheaper one as it will be just as good as one of the more expensive prams.
Argh this is so confusing, and I'm starting to get obsessed with it. I'm looking on the net at prams all the time.
Oh yeah I prefer 3 wheel ones too.
Please help, does anyone have any suggestions and any bad exeriences with a cheaper pram

Well I have a cheapish one, mine is the bertini marine pram that is often on sale for farmers at half price. It's a really good pram and has lots of storage places all over it. It's really strong and well worth the $200 I paid for it. We have had no bad experiences with ours

We have had three wheel strollers ...wasn't overly thrilled with them, one was a steelcraft I spent $400 on brand new, had to sell as I had great difficulty fitting it in my boot and was such a hassle to unfold! Ended up selling on Trade Me and moving to a cheaper pram...
A mothers choice(4 wheel) from Farmers ...the wheels didn't last long & it was hard to steer after a while because the front ones swivelled in all different directions and pram would tip.
The one we have now is fantastic, I will give you the link for it here
We bought it when it was on special $99 down from $130 i think...cheapest pram we invested in and by far the best! It serves newborn through to 17kg ...and now with Lucas at 11months of age its perfect for him to sit up in and if he nods off while out in the pram just a flick of a switch and i can put him into layback/recline position no hassle without him waking!
I found it really easy to steer & fold up ...very compact and lightweight compared to most!
Really it comes down to personal choice ...

Kebakat - that one from Farmers sounds great, I haven't seen it in our store, but I could always ask. Does it lie completely flat. I forgot to say that I really want one that lies flat, most of the Mothers Choice ones I've looked at don't recline very far so bubs wouldn't be lying down flat.
Mum2Lucus - I actually have one of those, I used to use it for DD, but I didn't think it would be suitable for a newborn since the back doesn't lie comletely flat and I was worried they might fall out. Also with the smaller wheels I find its not that good when walking a long distance.

It doesn't go totally flat, but pretty close. Comes with a rain cover as well. You can also get the capsule that goes with it which clips in it (I never bothered with this).
I love my pram, it's soo easily to move around and its a nice height.

lol MissAngel!
I had a 3 wheel steelcraft one, what a piece of *SH*T! It was really unsteady and a pain to push and never folded down right.
Then we got a plain umbrella stroller from K Mart and it was awesome. I would look into something similar next time. Not interested in another bulky pain in the a** pram!

Yeah the bulky ones suck! I LOVE my nice compact umbrella fold, if i ever have another this type will be my first choice (providing it serves from newborn upwards)

We have a Strider 3 & love it. I like it b/c we can have baby facing us while he's little & turn him around when he gets a bit bigger. When it folds down it is pretty bulky but no more so than other 3 wheelers I imagine.
I can't compare our stroller to any cheaper ones but just wanted to say we're very happy with the Strider.

sally belly, do you find that the back wheels on your Strider are too wide for some doors? And since Liam is only 2 months, does he sleep ok in it since it doesn't like completely flat, or do you have the bassinet for it?
I've heard some bad stories about Steelcraft but I guess its personal preference

The only problem with that is I live in Southland and most of the listings are in the Nth Island so I'd end up paying a lot for postage.

I had a $200 Babywise one from the Warehouse with Maya, it lasted 2 years of serious use, came to London with us and braved the London Underground, escalators, stairs etc. Was 3 wheels, but light and folded compact, it was a great pram. Eventually the front wheel came off and I had to get a new one, but I more than got my moneys worth.
If the gremlins had been just the one baby I would have had a cheaper pram, we only went with the Phil and Teds coz it is the most convenient way of transporting two toddlers.

So far I haven't found that the back wheels are too wide. Hubby tells me he *thinks* that the wheels are slightly wider than other strollers but so far I've not had any probs. Liam sleeps in it fine even though it doesn't go completely flat. We don't have the bassinet & I didn't even know you could get one.
I too had heard bad things about Steelcraft (mostly after doing a search on here ) but so far I'm very happy with it.
Good luck with your decision. It took us AGES to decide on the Strider.

we had a steelcraft and had no issues with it.....only reason we sold it was because it didn't have a toddler seat for when charli came along.
we now have a bertini jet...which has the most annoying harness clip ever!!! my friend has the bertini marine and she loves hers. also, my SIL has a babywise cheapie from the warehouse and they have never had a problem with it in 2yrs....it's more compact when folded than my bertini too

Well I'm pretty pleased with my latest purchase.
I went into Farmers to buy the Steelcraft Strider. They have 30% off so it would have been $350, I thought that was a bargain
Anyway, I still wasnt sure if I was happy with it but the sale finishes tomorrow so I didn't want to miss out.
The lady points to a pram and says, 'you can have that for $75'. I couldn' believe it, it was originally $249 on sale for $150 and she said it was old stock so needed to get rid of it.
Its a 3 wheeler, Mothers Choice. Its not exactly what I wanted, mainly cos its blue, but has all the features I wanted. I just couldn't say no to a deal like that.

We have got a Mothers Choice one, its got a little cover to protect baby from wind etc and it comes with a rain cover. Easy to fold and sturdy and its a 3 wheeler. I think it was about $250 or something. We have the matching highchair aswell
