I went, not for latching but for sleeping. I actually found it really helpful (and they take care of bubs while you are there so its a bit of a break!) I learned a lot from it and also felt reassured that I was actually doing things ok, I just had a stubborn child!

Have you considered contacting the la leache league for some help with the latching rather than the family centre? They are really lovely and extremely helpful.

yep i already had a LC visit.. she was great ..i assume she was part of the LLL.. ? i think she just wants me to go to get extra confidence and help.. I'm all for anything that helps us get into a routine.. :) though i feel so much better now i can cope with the nights and days by myself and he's sleeping better and latched on the other side finally!:)

I would definatley go while things are ok,..rather than waiting to see if things get worse first! They will have heaps of advise. We went (in Auck, and for sleep), and they had loads of short education videos and pamplets as well advise from the nurses. So good! Isla was almost 5 months old, and after visiting 3 midwives and 3 Drs previously, it was the nurses at the plunket family centre that diagnosed Isla as having silet reflux,...they set us on the path to finally getting the right help for her.

I went along to the one in Auckland twice....they were life-savers! They were so helpful when I was having a nightmare with b/f. They had completely sensible advise and never made me feel judged (which the LC did!) The moment I walked in (and they obviously saw I was upset)...they said that they mummies have to leave the guilt at the door. They look after you so well, it was like having 2 Nanas for the day (our local centre is staffed by a couple of older ex-karitane nurses)

I cant rave about them enough! I went when Ollie was 3 weeks old and then again the following week for a follow up. I hope that you find them as helpful as I did!

It was the best thing I did regards breastfeeding, the nurse was very honest with me, referrred us to speech therapy becasue the problem seemed to be Fay not me, and she also diagnosed PND and got me treatment really quickly. I honestly don't think I could have moved on from my difficulties with BF if it wasn't for her. My experiences were in wellington, but I am sure I have heard that the centres aere good all over. It reassured me that I was normal too cos she said she saw problems like mine all the time (mind you I say that to my patients as well and i lie to half of them)

You should go while you have the chance, wish the old karitane hospitals were still around too

I wish I had accessed my family centre when I was having sleep issues with Alize.

I went once a week for about 8 weeks with the gremlins just to get some rest. The gremlins were unsettled and screamed all the time and I really felt like it was just me so it was nice to go to Family Centre and have the plunket nurse say "gosh, they are very unsettled aren't they?" - was nice to know I wasn't going mad!
