Just wanting to get a feel for other parents with children who have or may still suffer from asthma. Or in general some help/advise

Our son is being assessed next week....no idea what they are going to do to him
He has been a chesty baby from birth, but no one would diagnose him.
He is under a paed who has his allergies under control. Until yesterday we have had a happy healthy child for about 4 months, he has a cold which the Dr said today is his upper respiratory...
He is back on trialling ventalin and just wait and see....

haha what am I asking? Do you have children with asthma? When were they diagnosed? Is there a family history? Have they outgrown it?

Any help advise will be appreciated I am sorry I so can not spell

My eldest was just diagnosed recently- we knew it most likely would come on at some point as she has a pretty bad dustmite allergy.
My Mum has mild asthma and my Uncle has it quite bad too. Mum was only diagnosed about 5 years ago and my uncle has had it him whole life.

Charlotte is on 2 puffs of the preventer every morning and night and it keeps hers at bay- shes only ever needed the reliever a couple of times and thats when shes been sick with coughs.

We keep her whole room as dustmite free as we can- we got a list from her specialist of things we could do. She has a new mattress with a antimite cover on it- as does her pillow. We clean her sheets and bedding and soft toys frequently in HOT water (this kills the mites) and dry them in the sun which also helps. Our vacuum has a hepa filter and I do her room every day as unfortunately we are in a rental so can't rip the carpet up- luckily its new carpet though.

Do you know what is triggering his attacks?

jack was about 18mths when he had his first asthma attack....we were in blenheim at the time and he had a cold for a few days before hand...the dr shrugged it off as a chest infection 'it will get better with anti-biotics'

ok, so we start giving him them, then drive back to chch that day, by the time we get back, jack was gasping for breath, his chest was really heaving.....i have asthma myself so i took him to my gp and he referred us straight to the hospital. we spent that night in the childrens ward giving jack ventolin via a spacer with a mask every 2-3hrs.

that was the worst he's ever been and i hope it stays that way....when he gets colds or runs around alot he gets wheezy so he has a few puffs of the inhaler....he hasn't been officially diagnosed with asthma because they won't do until he has another 'attack' but as i have it, my dad has it and my granddad has it, i'm sure he'll have it for life.....

i'm hoping charli doesn't have it, but it looks as though she will too

Last jan both of my boys were taken to hospital by ambulance with "virus causing asthma" - nowadays Jake doesn't seem to get much in the way of symptoms, but everytime Taine gets sick - he gets asthma. I had a good talk to my previous doctor in Gisborne (whom i love) - and she basically said when he got wheezy, i could just give him some ventolin, and that they don't like to diagtnose in children under 2 or 3 because at that stage EVRYTHING looks like asthma. Anyway, I have asthma myself so am a bit more aware of stuff - luckily or not.

How old is your son for a start? if he is under 2, it may not be asthma at all.

If it is, get an action plan asap. find out what symptoms are, when you need to go to the doctor, when you need to got to the hospital. Give this plan to everyone who looks after your son.
For taine, I take him to the doctor for minor things- like a cold - because I know untreated, it goes to his chest. He is taking vitamins as well (he eats realy well, but just for added immunity).
Steam also helps clear airways and when Taine is just a wee bit wheezy, I put him in the bathroom and run the shower.
Swimming is also really good for asthmatics.

and yes, you cangrow out of it. Weirdly I have had medium to severe asthma all my life - i get preggers and BOOM gone! In fatclooking back, should've been the first sign I was pregnant with Taine. Now is back a wee bit, but nothing like it used to be.

asthma - as kiddie illnesses go - is scary as, BUT completely controllable!

Lizzle - funny you mentioned being preggy and it going, the same thing happened to me. My GP said that when you get pregnant and have asthma it either gets worse or goes away! Luckily mine went away - I hardly had to take my inhalers at all during my whole pregnancy!! It was fantastic! It has come back a little bit now, but nowhere near as bad.

I didnt get diagnosed until we came to live in NZ when I was 13, I think mine was triggered by allergies mainly. I keep a pretty close eye on the wee man, but luckily (touch wood) he hasnt even really had a cold yet. Hopefully he will get his daddys fortitude as he never gets sick!!

Thank you for your replies :)

We have no family history of asthma, I do not even know what triggers his wheezing. All his allergies have been tested, it came back with nuts and dogs. We have the nuts under control and always avoid dogs.

Wow T was just like Jack, we were in Christhcurch and they said oh just a chest infection, here is some antibiotics. We flew home 2 days later to a child who was terribly ill....but he was only 11 months so no one did anything more than antibiotics :(

T is now 20months. He is still under a paed for his allergies, I discussed the asthma with him and he will not diagnose it till he is 5....
We have had his ears tested as he has had many infections and glue ear when he was younger, we did it through public. She was LOVELY to say the least, it is her that has had us referred to the hospital to have the asthma looked into.

Well last night I gave T the inhaler when we got home from a walk and wow what an improvment! He even slept 10 hours! He does sleep through every now and again so I am greatful for when he does.

Once again thank you for your emails. I appreciate any support/advise. I just hope we are finally heading down the right track.
