Since Monday I've been almost totally unable to fall asleep. I'm so shattered but can't seem to sleep and if I do drop off I'm generally awake again within an hour.

I just tried to have a nap as I'm soooooooooo tired but an hour later gave up.

Any one else get this???

Low iron can cause trouble getting to sleep, its like a double whammy, firstly you are exhausted from lack of iron but then that lack of iron stops you from sleeping. Are you taking a pregnancy multivit? Were you iron levels good when they did maternal bloods? most gps do iron at the same time.

Have you tried all the old tricks i.e. hot milk, lavendar pillows, warm bath, rescue remedy etc?

Is there something particularly bothering you at the moment that you can talk out with someone (stress of 1st tri after mc)? Are the neighbours being loud again today?

Maybe you should try visiting a naturopath. Many of them will make specific remedies up from scratch to suit you. You could have a special preggy friendly sleep concoction made.

Worst comes to worst why not lie on the couch and watch some completely mind numbing cr*p on tv so at least your body and mind are getting a rest if not a sleep.

My massage therapist suggested magnesium - would check this with someone else prior to taking it though! I had similar problems though it was more that I woke constantly through the night. I tried homeopathic stuff, Bach's sleep rescue rememdy which is safe in 1st trimester, massage from DH with lavender moisturiser and in the end went onto sleeping pills for a week (but I was 4 months).

Good luck - I really hope you find something that helps cos lack of sleep is a killer!

I have the same problem sometimes Fiona - its so frustrating cos you are just so tired you want to sleep but you can't. For me, its normally if either I've had a nap during the day I can't get to sleep at night or otherwise sometimes I'll just wake up in the middle of the night, go to the toilet and can't get back to sleep (then DH breathing/light snoring drives me mental and I get all stressed).
I have been doing some breathing relaxation type things before I go to sleep and have now got some of the Aromatherapy Company relaxing body lotion that I put on my arms before bed each night which is quite nice, and when I've woken in the middle of the night I go and sleep in the spare bed - and have a really good sleep!!!

I go for a long walk with my doggies before bed, If I miss one night then I end up tossing and turning and waking up 5-6 times in one night.
Maybe making yourself physically more tired will help your body to sleep. Sleems to work for me

magnesium shoudl eb fine to take, iw as taking it last preggy for leg cramps, if my legs were achy during the avo evening, i knew i'd be up screaming in pain during night, so would take magnesium tab and i'd be fine.
Check with gp first, but it should be fine to take, i think it helps relax the muscles or something
