Topic: Aucland to Wellington, How Long? Posted: 18 March 2008 at 4:48pm |
How long would it take to drive from Auckland to Wellington? I want to go there next saturday to pick up a car and drive it home. I would be flying at 7am from Chch, arrive at 8.20am. Hoping we can be on our way by 9am. Would i make it intime for a ferry at 6.15pm? Or should i go for one in the morning Sunday?
TIA

Its about 8hrs, not including stops.
Where's the car? Did you want me to check it out for you?

Hi Kandice
From memory it takes about 9 hours. This isn't taking into account stops for food, petrol & the toilet . I think you'd need to be in Wellington an hour before the ferry departs so I'd say that going on Sun morning would be far better. You wouldn't want to get a flat tyre or something along the way.
It must be a great car if you're prepared to come all the way up here to collect it

Its the only car i feel i like. Its the first newer (well newer than my 1977) iv ever bought. Its a 1993 Mazda Sentia. Apparently its a nice travelling luxary car.
Mel, would you check it out? Only if he is near you? The guy seems nice too. Hes going to pick us up from the airport and everything. Because iv never been to the north island, hes writing us directions and giving us maps.

Kandice I think it only takes about 7-8 hours, depending on where in Aucklan dyou are picking up the car. It can take hours just to get out of Auckland.
Its a pretty easy run now and you do need to be at the ferry 1 hour before.

I think you would be pretty sweet with 8 hours. I cant imagine you drive too slowly . Whenever we have done it we normally drive non stop till Waiouru and have a bite to eat at the Army Museum cafe and then carry on to Welly. There are a couple of places you can miss the turn and go the wrong way. Somewhere around Shannon and/or Bulls. And there is a speed camera in Bulls!!!!!!

It takes 6 hours to get from Bulls to Auckland with a toilet stop at Waioru and lunch stop at Taupo. Its another 2 hours from Bulls to Wellington Ferry terminal.
You do need to be at the ferry terminal 1 hour before it leaves.

We used to travel Auckland to Wellington alot when we were younger. You are looking at 7-8 hours on a good run, no stops. As you are not familiar with the roads I would suggest you take a Sunday morning ferry, it would take the pressure off and be alot safer. Plus are you travelling alone or taking the family? I can't imagine Jack being happy to sit in his car seat for that long without stops.
Drive safely!

Please don't tell me you are taking the kiddo - it will take FOREVER if you have Kylah - just a warning. I'll assume you aren't!!
It usually takes me 5ish hours to get back to Rotorua and then 2.5 to Auckland from there (depending on where in Auckland - it's quite a long way from north to south!).

And just incase you need to factor it in, you need to check in the car 1hr before the ferry leaves

Last time I drove up to Auckland it took over 11 hours (from Wellington to Glenfield on the North Shore). Granted north shore's further than you want to go and I did have two kids with me and everything that could go wrong with the trip did go wrong.
We had a car sick child. Plenty of stops along the way so the kids could stretch their legs. Road works in several places which slowed us down considerably. Then when we finally got into auckland it was peak hour so we were stuck in slow moving traffic when we got a flat and had to pull over at the greenlane turnoff to unpack the boot, grab the spare, change the tyre, repack the boot and head on our way.
To play it safe I'd catch the morning ferry and have a rest in Wellington before catching the ferry and driving the rest of the way home on Sunday am.

I've just had all our wedding guests travel between Akl to Palmy and Palmy to Wellington it would seem there are roadworks the length of State Highway 1 at this time of year.
And yeap it usually takes us another 2hours to get from the end of the Southern Motorway to West Auckland, the joys of Auckland traffic.

Wow.
No Kylah is staying with my mum. I couldnt think of trying to take her awell. But i will buy her stuff lol. Ok we want to stop in Rotorua? Just for a quick look. We are either going to catch the 1am ferry or more into the morning like 6 or 7 if there is one.
It is a long way to go for a car but its more i wanted an excuse to just do something out of the blue. Plus its a car i want and there are none down here.
Mel i will find out where he lives.
Are there markets in Auckland on Saturday DF said something about Otara markets?

Yay road tripping. Rotorua might be a bit off track tho. The quickest way from Wlg would be SH 1 to Waioru, 49a past Ohakune, 4 past national park, 3 & then 1 from Hamilton. But since your up these ways why not look around
