Topic: Pill & blackcurrant juice - remind me? Posted: 19 March 2008 at 10:09pm |
Remind me what it is about these two? Is it a certain quantity of blackcurrant juice that makes the pill ineffective and why is it? Is it just because of high quantities of Vit C or is there a different ingredient that does it?

I think my 'move-along' breakfast diet might now dictate that I take my pill in the evening No wonder I've been having shocking cramps this week! *sigh* another lesson learnt!

Found this on a website:
Apart from missing active pills there are a few other things, which interfere with the effectiveness of the pill.
The pill is affected by various medications including antibiotics to treat infections, tablets for conditions such as tuberculosis, epilepsy and fungal nail infections.
Care should be taken when using over the counter medications in combination with the pill, as some of these, including St John’s Wort, may make the pill less effective.
Women taking the pill used to be warned not to drink grapefruit juice or take high dose Vitamin C as well but now it is recommended that if you wish to have either of these items just take them at the opposite time of day that you take your pill, i.e. juice or Vitamin C tablet with breakfast, the pill with dinner.
Finally, the pill will not work if it is not adequately absorbed. Therefore, if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea that lasts more than 24 hours you will need to follow the seven day rule or take the ECP if you did have sex without a condom and you want to reduce your risk of becoming pregnant.

I asked my doc about this a while ago, and she said that you'd actually have to consume enormous quantities of vitamin C (as in, eat nothing but oranges!) before it would compromise the pill and not to worry about it. She also said the reason they say no grapefruit is that grapefruit has a particular enzyme in it that interferes with the absorbtion of the hormones in the pill into the blood from the digestive tract.
But obviously every doctor has different views on this, so who knows!?!

That's the same reason you can't take grapefruit juice with blood pressure meds, it interferes with the absorption.
I know nothing about the pill. In fact, it would appear I know nothing about contraception in general
