Who are you with and do you recommend them? I'm looking for a cheaper one (than Contact Energy), which I hear should be easy but I want to make sure I transfer to someone with a good reputation We have gas & electricity and pay by DD

We're with Mercury, they're not the cheapest but they are reliable. We had a really bad experience with Empower a few years ago.

We switched to Energy Direct (local company) from Contact. So far excellent service!! And far far cheaper - on gas alone we save $15 on our summer bills.

I have heard about Wanganui Gas and they are good. You still get your bill through Contact but Wanganui gas give you the power and gas. I'm with Contact (power and gas) and our bill is about $160 a month.

I used to use Wanganui Gas as well - I didn't find them to be the most organised when it came to changing names on accounts, etc, but their prices were competitive. Contact did an agressive marketing campaign here - sent out their price lists and a letter to people signed up with other companies, offering a free magazine sub for a year for switching to them. Their prices were also marginally lower than our company (Genesis), so I signed up and got my Marie Claire with it. Then a couple of months later comes the 'we've put our prices up across the board' letter. Freakin dodgy of them!!!

They are an independant trading division of Wanganui Gas
Their phone is 0800 567 777 if you want it.
Take gas for example. We have 1 gas heater we use only in winter. With contact just to have the stupid thing connected with no useage was $40 something a month. With Energy Direct they have charged us $21.

We don't have a gas heater but we have gas hot water. Totally stupid arrangement cause we have to pay 2x line charges all the time

I know. I hate that we have gas anything.. it being for a heater makes it worse because we don't use it all summer so we are paying line charges for something that we aren't using but if we disconnect all companies generally charge reconnection fees. Grr!

Genesis is the worst environment wise.
We just changed to Mercury which is about middle of the road in terms of environmental degradation but is working out a whoooole bunch cheaper than Genesis.
We had a girl come knocking and she offered us a 3 year fixed rate deal. Seemed a good time to change for environmental as well as financial reasons.
