Topic: Baby Food Recipes Posted: 22 February 2006 at 9:57am |
Joey has hit the 6 month mark and is bored with his pureed vegies and fruit. Gave him some jars when we were away at the weekend and he LOVED the pasta bolognaise and chickeny one.... too expensive to buy so I was just wondering if you guys had tips for food to make at home????
Thanks!!

I was just about to ask you guys re solid food....Zaara is nearly 4 months old, when should I start giving her pureed stuff? and how did you guys make yours? I am thinking of starting her on solid (puree).
What do you guys think?

I started on apples and pears... just steamed them til soggy then popped them in the blender. Apparently with starting solids the deal is between 4 and 6 months when the seem ready for it. I put it off as long as possible basically 'casue I was lazy and liked the idea that breastmilk was always readily available whereas if I was out puree may not be!! Quinn was wee piglet once we did start, hoovered upanything and everything within a five mile radius!

Hey Roksana, was talking to plunket nurse today re solids - she said its 4-6 months when they seem ready for it, but they are tending to say closer to 6 months now cos their gut may not be quite ready for it yet.
I read in Kathy Frays book about the enzyme ptyalin (it is in saliva and helps break down starches). apparently you shouldnt give kids under about 2 any starches (no potato, kumara, pasta, bread, rusks...) so basically just veges, fruit and then meat, until they get most of their teeth and make enough ptyalin to break down the starch in their gut. She said it can cause gut problems. Anyone know much about this? Apparently they have been publishing research about it since the 1800's.

I can't even remember what I used to make Ella to eat, but she hated most of the tinned baby foods so didn't buy them. The only one she loved was custard! I do remember that she got sick of the pureed stuff VERY quickly and we went onto finger foods at 7 months (despite the recommendation being 8.. she was fine with them).
Aimeejoy: I've never heard of that and I'm sure that if it were really a problem then surely our doctors/plunket nurses etc would make it known?? If not then I'm sure most if not all of our kids are going to have gut problems (including us, and our parents too) as we have all eaten those things before 2.

Jake loved and still loves pumpkin and kumara. he wasn't too keen on fruit, apart from now - he loves bananas and nectarines - he'll eat four a day if i don't hide them. be careful with stone fruit too early though - especially if you are going out....disaster looms!

So Aimee when are you planning to give Hannah Pureed food? do you think she is ready? I cant tell if Zaara is.
I will try her on puree soon...will see how that goes. I dont plan to buy the tin stuff...I'll just make it at home. So you might need to share that recipes book with us Ana.

Roksana I am going to wait until she is 6 months - she is obviously doing really well just on breast milk (putting on about 200g a week) so will wait until later.

You know what Zaara is putting on around the same amount of weight but does not have those cute chubby cheeks....I always think that may be she is not getting the right stuff from my milk, but then according to plunket nurse she is gaining weight well.....hmmmm she must have her dads body!!!

Roksana, we swore we would always make our own baby food, but I must admit, having a few cans in the cupboard were great for emergencies, especially if we went out for the day, we'd put one in the bag just in case. I'd recommend having a few in the cupboard for those times.

Roksana... watch her while you are eating... if she is following your food and trying to reach out and grab, apparently that is when they are interested.

It tells you some signs in the thriving under five plunket book thingy, also your plunket nurse can help you out by telling you some signs that they show you when they are ready.

And one sign I learnt the hard way... If you put the food in their mouth and they arent ready they do a raspberry and shoot it back out (usually in your face!)
