Hi,

This is totally random, but for those of you who gave birth in a hospital, did you visit it before hand to check it out? So it wouldn't be totally new?

I know i'm in very early days but I was reading somewhere about doing this and thought that sounds like a good idea, but I think it was a US book. Do you know if you do this in NZ? Also not native here so no idea.

Sorry if this is toally naive just hought i'd ask.

Yep we did, just so we knew where to go and which entrance to use (and therefore which carpark), while we were in "oh no the baby's coming" panic mode. They have an open session I think every Saturday at Waitakere Hospital for this purpose. Not sure how other hospitals work?

we did a tour of the hospital as part of the ante-natal classes. The ones I did were run by the hospital though, not sure if private ones would offer the same. I did think it was pretty good, I had no idea what  a birthing pool looked like, and also was good just knowing exactly where to go when arriving..

I'm doing my AN class at waitakere hospital and we get a tour as part of the course.

Not sure if you can go round the maternity ward by appointment? Your mw will probably know.

Oh that's good then. I shall ask the midwife to see if the hospital we are going to does the same thing.

I would think essentials like knowing where to park and stuff useful to save huge heated debates while mid labour.

My midwife arranged to meet us there and showed us around - great considering I went into labour the following week! We did our usual check up there at the same time in an empty room.

I know Akld City does organised tours of the labour and delivery suite.

I didn't bother with Maya coz I had been at a friend's birth at the same hospital already (Nat Womens) and with the gremlins I was admitted for observation at 26 weeks so knew the place pretty well.

Our midwife gave us info about touring the hospital and it was also recommended during our an classes but we never did it.

At wgtn hospital the maternity wards are in a completely seperate buidling with it's own entrances (including a seperate entrance for the delivery rooms). Plus the signage is pretty clear so we knew where to go.

It's a great idea to do the tour if you feel you should to help get prepared but if you never get around to doing it don't worry - to tell you the truth when the time came for us to get to the hospital figuring out where to park the car was the last thing on my mind, my DH and I got dropped off by the entrance and my mum went and parked my car and joined us later.

Auckland hospital used to do tours but we were told they've stopped doing them now They have a 'virtual tour' video on their website but we could never get it to work from any computer.

I never got the chance for a tour but had one booked. I think it's a good idea if you have the time to do it

I would have loved a tour but I had to figure out where everything was while I was in labour. It was weird walking the streets of Dunedin from carpark to maternity ward, wearing DH's trackies and a towel between my legs! Not exactly dignified. We lived 3 1/2 hours away from hospital so it was out of the question to have a tour. I would have eased my mind a lot beforehand if we had been able to visit the hospital.

Yup we went for a trip around the hospital with our antenatal classes, and they were private classes, but then again i suppose the gisborne hospital is a lot smaller than the 'big city' hospitals!!
