Topic: It finally happened... Posted: 08 May 2008 at 4:04pm |
Lucas had his first allergic/anaphylactic reaction to food ...tomato ketchup was the culprit!
Scared the living daylight out of me, his face puffed up, had trouble breathing and his lips were all swollen like a fish (and as an added bonus they turned completely WHITE). He was almost choking.
I think it's time I request he has RAST tests/skin prick tests done. With a serious history of allergies/anaphylaxis in the family (as in ME being allergic to nearly everything) I don't see why my Dr. hasn't mentioned getting it done sooner.
So has anyone else's kid reacted to tomatoes/sauce?

Oh no Steph! That's so scary! Is he OK now?
My friend's little girl used to get hives on her face from certain brands of sauce, it wasn't the tomatoes but rather one of the preservatives or additives they put in the cheaper brands, she could only have watties. She used to react to some mayonnaises too for the same reason.

Yeah it was Watties ketchup, not sure about the difference between that and sauce. I will go and analyze the label now.
He is fine now thank you for asking Emma, his lips are back to normal size & colour and his face is yellow again LOL (He's been turning yellow lately with REALLY yellow nose due to too much beta carotene ...he doesn't eat green veges which is a pain)
He got so distressed though, just came out of nowhere. It's diff when its YOUR kid, when it's me I go into panic stations ...with Lucas I totally lost the plot!

Hugs! How scary! Hope ok now?
Joey gets a really red rash around his face wherever he has smeared tomato sauce OR ketchup. Doesn't seem to bother him though and goes away after a while... and there's no way he would let us take his ketchup away! LOL

Oh no Steph. That's so scary!
I'd be in real trouble if Michaela was allergic to tomato sauce, I swear sometimes it's the only thing on her plate she'll eat
ETA: I'm curious, is he ok with fresh tomatos?

Oh no! Reactions are horrible, and scary
My younger cousin was never allergic to anything untill falling down the stairsone day at school. Her head bleed severly but the teachers didn't bother taking her to hospital. Her mother had to come down to school and take her hours later. Since then shes allergic to almost everything possible.

Far out that is scary! I'm glad you're both ok after that shock.. I hope the test will give you a better idea of exactly what to avoid.

Sh*t steph!how scary for you , are you (and Lucas of course) alright?
when C was about six months old we were going down to Morrinsville, and she got a rash all of a sudden, i didnt have any cream or anything to put on it so i sat in the back expressing breastmilk onto my palms and rubbing that on her (worked btw) -haha at the look on the truck drivers face that had the misfortune (or fortune :-P) of driving up next to me .....

OMG how scary, Steph! Yeah I'd say you've got every reason to demand a RAST and a skin-prick test after that. He's old enough for them and you've got very good reason to want them done. Keep the ketchup container or the label from it so you can refer to the ingredients later.

Lucas is fine now, thank you everyone who has showed some level of concern - you are so sweet.
And I'm good (for those of you that asked), was just a little taken back by it all. I have basically been expecting him to have an allergic reaction to SOMETHING somewhere along the line, just surprised its taken this long.
Of course I wouldn't know if he was allergic to what I am allergic to as I can't prepare nor eat the food so he doesn't come into contact with it (peanuts, all nut varieties, eggs, fish ...all seafood & chicken, and sulphates...and anything containing traces or oil. Severe anaphylaxis.) ...
And in reply to whether or not he's eaten fresh tomatoes before, when he was around 8 months I gave him a couple of cherry tomatoes, after only sucking the seeds out of 2 of them he came out in a bright red rash that didn't subside till a couple days later. So I avoided giving them to him again (same goes with normal tomatoes).
BUT in saying that, he loves eating toast soldiers dipped in Watties Spaghetti and doesn't seem to react to that. So who knows.
Will get on the blower & book an appt with Dr. for early next week to organize tests.
Thank you all for your messages. So sweet

Oh so scary! Glad hes ok. Charlotte is moderately allergic to plum tomatoes- maybe its a certain type of tomato hes allergic too? She can eat heinz and watties sauce but most pasta type sauces she can't. Its a bit hit and miss but I always know if theres plum tomatoes in something because she'll have one bite and refuse to eat anymore!
