i dont eat ham, but i eat a lot of tinned tuna, any kind really, and ive had no problems, i eat salad and tuna for lunch a lot, and as for not eating seafood, fish is still okay, its just things like mussels, clams, oysters etc. as long as the fish is cooked and not raw as in sushi then its fine. hope this helps

I ate tune all the time...I love tuna!!!
And I was the paranoid one.....I did not have Ham, smoked chicken or fish but can fish should be okay to eat. Also you can have seafood only if had been cooked properly. I ate fish and prawns but made sure that it was cooked well......

When I was pregnant I had wendy's and Burger king for lunch.....I loved it!!! And yet I ususally avoid those places......

yeah, i have been told to avoid certain type of seafood (mussels etc...) and certain fish that contain high levels of mercury. but normal fish is fine provided its cooked thoroughly and you eat it while its hot, not cold.
tuna is good for you and fine to eat... but cold ham should definalty be avoided, again eating ham feshly cooked and cooked to piping hot its fine.
i choose never to take a risk, as i couldnt bear the thought of potentially harming the baby, but i do know of people who have eatin deli meat! argh! and cold ham etc... its best just to not eat it, hey its not really that long in the scheme of things aye?? and its something to look forward to when baby is born (that was my treat after having my first... cold meat sandwhiches!)

My treat after having Maya was a kebab!

Canned tuna is fine (like everyone else has said). Cooked fish is also fine, the high mercury varieties such as lemonfish they recommend you limit to 4 150g servings per week - but in reality who eats that much fish anyway! I eat it once or twice a week.

Mmmmmm, craving Wendy's atm tho. Yummy!

I'm still having turkish...I just get lamb on rice and they cook everything to piping hot for me...they chuck it all the microwave and I have to wait a while to eat it properly! I'm not having the chicken option though...but then I'm off chicken.

Ham I'm only having if it's on pizza and freshly cooked.

Are tinned sardines ok? I love them on toast!

As far as I know. Tinned=preservatives=safe. Listeria grows on fresh foods, so I would guess once you have opened the tin you should eat them straight away and not save some for later iygwim.

I've been naughty - on the weekend I made ham/egg/salad sandwiches for my stepkids.... and I had one too..... and it was DELICIOUS!!!! It's the ham that I've been missing most. I've been pretty good the whole time, but on occasion I have slipped up.....

Also stay away from any food at the deli, like salads and everything because you never know how long it has been sitting there.

Paws - you could make your own vegetarian or tuna sushi. That would be safe.

Thanks Kazzles - you mentioned Wendy's which got me convinced that the only thing in th whole wide world I could eat without chucking up was a Big Classic with cheese.

So after Maya went to bed I went on a Drive Thru mission to Wendys. Willie was not impressed. I cooked dinner for him and Maya and refused to eat it myself...

I had thought of that too but my last attempt to make sushi failed and it's the salmon I'm craving! I'll just have to be patient!

My mum said the same thing.

My argument was that they wouldn't make a big deal about it if it wasn't a real risk.

But to be honest... I don't think that there is HUGE risk of contracting listeria. Just better to be safe than sorry. And preggo ladies (including myself when I was carrying Han) just love to get worked up about things! It's what they do best Gotta love hormones and that magical "Protective Instinct" it creates

Cream cheese is OK if it is newly opened - they are all heat sealed. But once the seal is broken listeria can grow. As far as I know salmon is a big no-no unless it is fresh salmon steaks well cooked.

And Nikki you're right - on average there are 2 cases per year of women contracting listeria during pregnancy, out of tens of thousands of pregnancies. So the risk is pretty low, but like you said, one that most of us aren't willing to take.
