Topic: In my day...blah blah blah... Posted: 16 May 2008 at 1:27pm |
Yesterday I was sitting at the bus stop with Ella and Benjy when a nice elderly lady came and sat down and started chatting to them. She told me how wonderfully Benjy was talking and said how polite and beautiful Ella was, it was all very lovely
Then she asked me where we were going and when I told her just up the hill to kindy she got really cross and told me we should be walking!
And then! I got the full spiel with use of the actual phrase "In MY day"! Apparently she had to walk 15 kilometers to and from school on a gravel road without shoes, rain, hail or sunshine. I was in internal hysterics! She told me I'm too soft on Ella, catching the bus to kindy so that she's not too tired by the time we get there and that she'll wind up fat if I'm not careful. (Those of you who know Ella will be laughing at that one!) She said that she wasn't trying to upset me but that mothers today just don't know what's good for their kids and that things are too easy for them, with a wink and a pat on the arm.
I had to laugh, I'm sure she actually thought she was passing on some really helpful wisdom to me

I hate that! I really do, it annoys me now. I work in an office and (at 29yo) I am the youngest person here with most of the ladies over 50 and many over 60 so I get heaps of great advise but there are one or two that jump on the "you don't know how easy..." band wagon.
Last week I was told that we don't know how easy we have it these days because we get parental leave which they never had when (the opinionated lady) had her children. I turned around and told her although that's true they also didn't have an expectation or financial need placed on them to return to the workforce placing their babies in the care of others shortly after giving birth. Her response "oh, well I'm just generalising Jo - I didn't mean you"

I love how random strangers (bus stop strangers are a classic example) feel obligated to dish out parenting advice.

LMFAO - Ella, fat? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!
Slightly OT but my nana apparently used to do the "in my day we walked 15 miles a day to school, barefeet in the winter" spiel to her kids, one day Dad measured it in the car and it was less than 2km

I wish someone would offer to teach me how to darn socks, lol! DH is always sporting holes in his and refuses to get rid of them!
Sometimes I really look forward to being old and having that as an excuse to be blatantly rude and opinionated

I get that but to the other extreme, we walk to school everyday unless it's snowing or theres a storm brewing, the mothers at school have a real issue with the fact that we walk to school, they can't fathom it at all.
It's a 45min round trip and its the only exercise Nyah gets, unlike their kids who get driven to school in their mummy's flash Ford Territory's...
I had a wee giggle at her comment about Ella.

i know my mum had to walk from tepapa / oranga to other side of one tree hill for piano lessons and also to where greenlane mcdonalds is (my grandddads butcher shop was there)....and when i thought about that i wondered how the heck they did it to be honest...that is a hell of a long walk!!! Dont blame the oldies for thinking we are lazy really....heck I drive to the mall which is like 1 km away! We are just lucky we have cars etc and the ability to cram more into our day - ummm lucky????
Let the oldies have their memories - but give me my car anyday....there are other ways of stopping our kids getting fat LOL!
