i have a bassinette but in the hospital they put toby in a hammock and he loved it. seems a lot of money tho for something that may not be used for very long... that would be my only worry with them.

I bought a hammock off TradeMe. It was in immaculate condition, with stand, and only $105.
I can't wait to use it! I have heard so many good things about them.

We have a hammock and a bassinet. the hammocks are GREAT for when they have wind and colic etc, they are also very comfy for baby as they mould around their backs.
You can also use them for quite a while, only problem is their feet will start to stick out the end as they get bigger lol.
The bassinet I wanted cos I can have it right next to my side of the bed so i can keep an eye on him at night
so we will use the hammock mostly during the day and when he is windy etc.
Ours is a Natures Sway hammock and it hangs from a hook in the ceiling, My grandparents bought it for us

They look really good. As kiwilaurie said, there are a few on trademe, if you don't mind a second hand one.

I never had one, but Maya was in one for two weeks in hospital and loved it, and when the gremlins were little and we used to go into the Baby Factory the ladies there used to put them in the display hammock while I got what I needed to get and it always settled them.

We had a Natures Sway hammock for the day which I put in the lounge and a bassinette by our bed for night time. I loved our hammock. we bought it from Natures Sway on Trade Me, it was a factory second although you never would have known. We also got the stand so we took it to my parent quite a few times when we went over for dinner and took it up to the bach.

We had a Natures Sway hammock for use during the day .. and a Ezee rocker bassinette for use at night.
I got our hammock off TM ... what was awesome is it came with the stand and an extra spring .. so she can use it till she is really really heavy lol
Now we have the bassinette downstairs in the lounge for her day sleeps .. her cot in our room for night time and the hammock at the grandparents.
Oh so we them all for different reasons lol.

Man that was an awesome response. i think when i do get pregnant im gonna go with the hammock. its $195 but you get 2 hooks plus a door frame thingy so i can put one by my side of the bed, one in the nursery and use the door attachment in the arch between the kitchen / dining and the lounge. thanks heaps guys :)

We borrowed a hammock, but Eva never liked it. However, she didn't like to sleep in anything for the first 6 weeks . We found her moses basket the best, and had that in her cot.

We've used a natures sway hammock and find it great. Liv's cosy and happy in there.
When we've had people to stay we've used the door jam thing and put her in our room (to avoid her waking them). And we've taken it to the grandparents place (great instead of a portacot).
We've been putting her in her cot every now and then to make sure she doesn't get addicted to it! Initially there was so much more for her to look at in and around the cot, that she took longer to settle. So I put her in the cot for some night time sleeps and now she can sleep in either, altho we prefer the hammock.
A friend's child had a phase where he didn't like the hammock, but they still use it for going to other people's houses and he sleeps fine.

My midwife gave me good advice - she told me to rent a hammock from Baby on the Move or your local Parents Centre (if they have them) and try it out for a couple of weeks. It's a lot cheaper than buying something that your baby doesn't like. They can be fussy little creatures!

A friend of mine used a hammock but her boy just wouldn't sleep it in after he was about 6weeks old then they used a cariboo bassinet which he slept through the night for the 1st time at only 6weeks when he went in it.
I'd say renting a hammock would be the best idea in case they don't like it.
