Topic: moving to OZ Posted: 27 May 2008 at 5:26pm |
Has anyone ever thought about moving to Australia?? Hubby and I are currently thinking about it.. I have lived there be4 and loved it.. Not sure what part of Oz yet .. It would really depend on where hubby can get a good paying job..
Seems like alot of people are doing the same thing because of the way the costs of living etc are going.. Although The same thing is happening in Australia but at least the wages are higher..

We have been considering it too but the idea of leaving my family is a really large factor - I am not sure I can live that far away from them.

My parents moved back there after 24 years of living in NZ.
Yes wages are higher over there but things are also the same price or more expensive. I told my dad that petrol had hit $2 here last week, he said if you convert the dollar then they are paying $1.68 a litre on the Sunshine Coast. Most of NSW is paying $2.02 and WA is paying $2.20 a litre.
I would def research it before you do look at it and also look at the cost of moving over there too as that isn't cheap.
Nuttymama is moving over there soon, i'm sure she would give you some details.

I've thought about it (not that hubby knows) and when I did my research we would be waaaaay better off if we did but I don't think either of us would want to live in another country from our family.

After spending nearly two weeks in Surfers two years ago, we seriously considered it. Still dream about doing it. I do know that we wouldn't move to Sydney, DH didn't like it there, he said it was ok for tourist but he couldn't live there.
I think we've missed the opportunity now, as Conor starts high school next year.

Yup, we're seriously considering it again (lived in Melbourne for 2 years). We'd go to Queensland this time, but both DH and I could earn WAY more over there...Not sure about leaving the fam though...

Yup we are considering it seriously right now, DH is a diesel mechanic and they are literally crying out for them and he can earn $100k + a year where as we are on $37k here, better opportunities as well, we are just looking into it further but looking at moving before the end of the year

Willie has great fantasies, he keeps seeing truck driving jobs advertised that pay $100K+, but he is too old and has too many health probs to drive the big road trains over there like he used to.
My parents would love us to move to Sydney, but bottom line is even if I wanted to (which I don't, I'm happy here) there is no way we could afford it. I'd have to work full time just to pay the rent and I wouldn't be able to afford to have the kids in care which would be close to $1500 a week conservative estimate.

We expect to move in about 3-5 years.

DH and I have thought about it. We would move to melbourne if we went (my home town). yes we would be better off financially, but worse off work/life balance for DH. He would have to do HEAPS more daily travel to get around.. So for the moment, we will stay here.

My FIL has recently been over there trucking, while the incomes are a lot higher so too is the cost of living: accommodation, food, etc.

We were going- it was all planned. We went for a visit for a week last time we came back to NZ (we were looking at Melbourne) and to be honest we weren't that impressed. We were still going to go though- then when we came 'home' I just knew we had to go back to NZ. I just can't imagine raising my kids anywhere else- the family and friends well and truly made up for the slightly better lifestyle we would have had there.
I recommend having a good hunt on the net and try to find how much you would earn, and the type of area you could live on that wage. Then go over for a few weeks and check out those areas, the houses and schools esp. Thats what we did and though the areas were nice, it was a big commute for DH and the private schools in the area were really cr*p. Thats what swung it for me- I could forgive almost anything if the kids were in good schools but you could find way better state schools in NZ rather than paying the fortune those places charged. That was specific to our situation though- you may find that all elements are better for you, thats why I reckon a good recon mission is the best idea

I can see us going in a few years time.
The only place to get interesting and decent paying jobs in NZ is Auckland and we don't want to live in Akl.
DH likes it here, I'm not fussed love Queensland and would move there in a heartbeat. My brother is there and doing really well.

Just from our own personal experience here in Brisbane, its not that much better than NZ!
We moved here 2 years ago and the cost of living is far more than in NZ. Yes, sure you can get better incomes (only in the right occupations that are in the labour shortage areas) BUT your living costs are far more expensive. Cost of food is a rip off. When we first moved here we were spending $80 a week on food, now 2 years later, were spending $150 average for just me and DH.
Child care is an absolute rip off and there are long waiting periods!!
Schooling is not streamline from school to school and state to state like NZ.
Medication and Dr bills are expensive, unless you see a Dr that can be bulk billed (100% funded by the govt and not income tested) which are few and far between. And health insurance is confusing and expensive with excesses and gap payments paid by you.
Most states have water restrictions, here in QLD at the moment were on level 6. Which means we are not supposed to use more than 140 litres of water per person per day. The dam levels are sitting at about 32%.
The cost to run a car is expensive depending on the engine size. To register our small 4 cylinder Huyndai Gets it cost us $520 for 1 year and insurance and servicing is expensive.
Having said all that, Aus is a great country. But personally IMO unless your in a skilled labour shortage occupation, your not any better off than what you are in NZ.
My advice is to research before you make a decision so you can make an informed decision. All the best.

Thnx everyone..
Yes Family is a big thing for me but my family would one day like to move over there too so they told me they would not be far behind or they reckon they will visit lots..
My hubby is currently a car sales manager and earns 25000 salary plus commission.. Over there he can earn 60000 salary plus commission.. There are also jobs over there that will pay him 150,000+ a year.. as service manager, etc in which he is qualified for..
Yes the cost of living is expensive but if you are earning that much it would not be soo hard.. and with his job he would ge a company car so car costs would not be an issue. So yeh it also depends on what type of jobs etc.
I have been looking at rental properties and they all look pretty resonable.. but maybe they are in bad areas? Thats what we would have to look at...
Gold Coast sounds nice like Coomera? They have resonable rental prices...
We have done a fair bit of research but as you say it would be best to go over for a few weeks first and check out the areas, schools, etc... and do more research..
There is definately a lot to think about.. WOW!! Hard decision thats for sure..
Anyway thnx everyone.. Now Id better go and do some RESEARCH!! lol..

We are moving over to the Gold Coast on September the 4th this year. And I can't wait.
We are not sure what area we will settle in yet as some of it is Dependant on schools. Thankfully it looks as if DH can transfer with his company. I have researched until my butt was numb from sitting at the computer and we still believe we have made the right decision.
For us the care we can get for Micheal being legally blind is supreme compared to here, plus DH is worth a whole heap more over there than here. Rents we found were about the same as here only the places we were looking at were much nicer than here. We are lucky in the fact that I have two BIL over there in the Isle of Capri and they are taking us around the "Good" areas when we get there.
As far as the cost of living hell it's dear here to and only going to get worse from what we can see.

Oh we thought about it too...and yes we could earn a bit more there but the main reason we wiped that thought was FAMILY!
Dh and I are both big on family and there is no way we would move away from them....specially not for money!
We are not doing so badly here......yes there are days where I just want to scream but from what Rianna has said, makes me feel like this is the best thing. For what ever reason I feel that NZ is a better place to raise kids!!
But every one is different so the move might be the best thing ever for them. Good luck with what ever you choose to do Kellie.

Coomera is a nice area. DH brother and wife were there and we stayed with them there when we first moved over here. Its about 50 minutes from Brisbane City and about 20 minutes from the Gold Coast (right on the beach I mean)..
Sorry to sound all doom and gloom but the more you earn the more you pay in taxes and with the new govt that happened here last year, the less you will be entitled to come July 1 this year, especially with child care assistance. Commission can be good, but KPI's and targets are set quite high.
The experience we have gained here is irreplaceable, not only from a working perspective but also life in general. Really makes you appreciate the smaller things in life and has made me realise how good a country NZ really is.
All the best with whatever you decide. The only real way to know if it will suit you is by trying it.

We just moved back from Adelaide, we went about 2.5 yrs ago I was 20 weeks pregnant with no.1, had two beautiful little girls over there but moved back here just over 6 weeks ago. Public services are brilliant you really see where your money goes ie: pools and parks etc, second hand cars are expensive might as well buy new but then you pay stamp duty on cars and stampy duty on your new home. For us it was not financially beneficial to be there, good for kids though, weather etc, although water restrictions and no green grass does get to you after a while! I agree with what others have recommended fully research before making the jump!
