Topic: Rock Hard Boobs!!!! Posted: 16 March 2006 at 12:05am |
Zac is now sleeping from 9:00 pm - 7:30 am so my boobs are rock hard by the time he wakes up for the day. I express before I go to bed. How long does that last for??

It takes a few days for your milk supply to catch up with events. Its supply and demand, and the amount you make should decrease soon to match Zac's reduced demand. Sorry, I don't know exactly how long it will last for.

I was thinking the same thing gsmum. By expressing at night, as far as your boobs are concerned, they think it is another feed so they will make the milk to keep up your supply.
It will take a abit for them to settle down, now that Zac is sleeping for longer.
Good luck hope they get better soon :-)

It does take a while to settle down and if bubs goes through a growth spurt it may build up again and you'll have the same prob! Never ending cycle (well, a couple-of-month cycle that seems never ending!)

Hi ladies,
Thanks for your replies. I finish feeding Zac, put him to bed, express and then go to bed myself.

Do you need the expressed milk (for bottle feeds etc?) Because if not, reducing the amount you express over a few days will help reduce your supply so that you are not quite so uncomfortable.
Otherwise, like the others have said, it's just a case of waiting for your supply to settle to match Zac's demand. Keep an eye out for lumps or red patches tho, as it's quite common to get mastitis of blocked ducts when feeding patterns change suddenly.

I only express so that my husband can give him a bottle each day which he hates and he will only drink 20 - 40 ml from the bottle...so I will only express that amount and see what happens.
Thanks for the advice
