Topic: Maori questions Posted: 18 June 2008 at 12:49pm |
Could someone help me out! In the last part of this minicourse have done I have a Maori unit to complete. Im not Maori and din't really pay attention at school so I need help!!
The questions are
How does the Marae foster its identity?
How does the Marae foster it's pride?
How deos the Marae foster self respect?
How does the Marae foster hospitality?
Write a brief paragraph identifying specific Tikanga of a particular hapu/iwi. e.g women are not allowed to speak on the Marae atea however they are allowed to speak from the mahau.
Note: This should reflect 5 specific tikanga as experienced on a Marae
My tutor told me to take it home and goolgle it and so far I have answered the other 32 questions lol but im stuck on these can anyone help????

Eek, I did Maori up to graduate level at uni and I live with a bunch of Maori and even I'm stumped. OK, not stumped, just lazy! Those questions are long winded!

But the reason why the women are at the back on the marae atea and not allowed to speak is supposed to be to protect them in the event the other tribe decides to turn nasty.
Which is ironic really coz the women always walk on to the marae atea first and the reason for that is coz the other tribe is less likely to turn nasty if they see the women first, it's less threatening, like a peace offering.
That's my understanding of it, but I can't apply it to five particular strands of tikanga and I have no idea about women speaking from the mahau coz a) I don't know what that is and b) I've never been on a marae where women are allowed to speak at all.

I guess for foster hospitality you could talk about inviting visitors on to the marae, some marae allow tourists to come as well, and a lot offer opportunities for schools etc. to have overnighters to learn more about the marae.
Foster identiy I guess is primarily thru the people associated with it. There is a Maori proverb that goes something along the lines of "he aha te mea nui? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata" which is "what is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people.
Sorry, I am soooo rusty!

I do think your tutor should be more helpful tho, those are tough questions and he should be giving you some direction at least. I have a heap of books here that would help with the answers but no time to look them all up!

I have written those down THANKs
Well the course was just my level 4 certificate in computing but because its a free course through te wananga o Aotearoa its compulsory to do the Maori unit at the end. I have passed my level 4 course sweet with no problems and it annoys me that this is whats holding me back.
I went to my tutor and she gave me a few readings which helped answer the other questions but has told me to google the rest or ask someone but its not the right type of thing to google if u get what I mean. I will go and see her tomorow and make her help me!

Yeah, it's hard to google that sort of stuff. I'm lucky that coz Willie is Maori I have access to lots of kaumatua who can share their knowledge.
