Topic: Chiaras birth story - Midwife POV Posted: 10 July 2008 at 12:05pm |
Posted on behalf of Twoblondinis (Toni) who was one of the support people "Pit Crew" for Emma at Chiara's birth
It was absolutely amazing!
Amy and I got there about 10.30am. Emma had the gel put on at 8.30am and was only having a couple of tightenings. We all went for a walk around the domain – still only a few niggles but nothing to get excited about.
The whole day was pretty much just like our normal coffee dates, sitting around chatting and laughing and eating ridiculous amount of chocolate and muffins LOL
The midwife finally came back at around 2.30pm. She broke the waters then started the Syntocin to get the contractions doing something.
It was pretty full on for Emma from there but she dilated really quickly and it was all over at 5.21pm.
I got some great shots of Chiara’s head as she started to come out.
The cord was really short and wrapped tightly around her neck so she stopped with her head half way out. Yvonne (the MW) sorted that out and baby literally flew out! No one had a chance to catch her so she birthed onto the bed lol
I think we were all a bit stunned that it happened so quickly. The midwife had just checked her and she was only 7cms but had lots of pressure and wanted to push – next thing we know we see a little head popping out! Emma was asking for an epi just a couple of minutes before (which she really didn’t want) so she did the whole thing with no pain relief whatsoever, just like she wanted :-)
The funny thing was that the midwife really wanted to go to the toilet and was about to leave just after checking her that last time, so lucky she didn’t go or else me, Keli and Amy would have had to deliver Chiara :-s
It was certainly a birth you’d wish for anyone and yourself. No mucking around – just get it over and done with lol
Baby was born at 5.21pm. Weighing 3515 grams (I think?!?!) we worked it out to be 7lb 12oz and 45cms long (or should that be short? She is TINY!!!!!!!)
I think Kels said from transition to birth was about 15 minutes. It seemed like it was just 2 pushes, one for the head and one for the rest.
The proud midwives (a.k.a. "The Pit Crew")

Lovely little Chiara

That is incredible - you should all be proud of yourselves that you can do that for a friend! Though, does sounds like it was a nice easy birth to be the pit crew at!!

ETA (since some lil boy was tired and needed to go to bed!)
Great that everything went fine and Chiara 'popped' out
yay for short 2 stage (pushing) I know exactly what its like cause Brooke was like that - 2 pushes and there she was - and hasn't stopped since so watch out you may have a busy lil girl on your hands
