Has anyone bought one of these? Or used them?

I am considering having one for labour, as I would like to try to labour without pethidine or an epidural (open to epidural if absolutely necessary but I really, really don't want the pethidine).

I know you can hire them, but DH has got a long term back injury that causes him constant pain, and we wonder if it would be good for him too.

So... just wanting others' thoughts and opinions - particularly recommended brands if anyone swears by them? I see you can get them on TradeMe but there is quite a big price difference.

I used one in lae pregnancy with Andrew on my back as it was very sore and he was posterior. My mum has one (thanks ACC) and I just used hers. It worked wonders, didn't use it in labour as I forgot it.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I used one in the early stages of labour and I couldn't say that it helped - didn't seem too. Then I found out that there are different kinds, so it pays to research which one to get depending on what you want it for.

TENS can be very good for pain relief. I have one that I use regularly for pain. I intend on using it for the early stage of labour but from all I've read its not that helpful beyond that point.
I got my TENS through the hospital a long time ago so don't know about all the brands available now.

I used a TENS machine in the early stages of labour before my epidural. I found it to be quite good and will probably use it again. It gave me something else to focus on when contractions started but doesn't really numb the pain.
A collegue has been using for severe back pain but has not had much success. She does have chroic pain so nothing really helps her though.
Maybe you could hire one and see how it goes before spending the money.
