When did you ladies pack yours?

I won't be packing mine until after we've shifted house, which of course is still a little while away, but I'm also wondering what *really* goes into them... and exactly what I *really* need to use for bubs? I of course am classic at overpacking esp. on holiday, and although this is no holiday, I DEFINITELY don't want to be lugging too many extras around.

So tips, advice and stories welcome as always !

half the stuff I packed i didn't use last time. Packed some food including lollies - which were great, massage oil (not used), clothes for baby and for me (remember a WOOL hat and singlet - they will lecture you if you don't have wool)a pillow (whichI left at the maternity ward), a camera with spare batteries/film/memory card. A notebook and pen. a magazine, and mp3 player.

I wonder what's up with the wool fetish? I realise that it's the warmest natural material out there, but hopefully they won't realise the wool hats I have were the ones *I* wore when I was that small !! Dunno about the singlet though, will have to check the ones I've got.

not too strict with singlet - you can hide them under other clothes. Also, the hosptial quite often has clothes. OOoh, just remembered DO NOT GIVE YOUR OWN CLOTHES TO THE NURSE TO BE WASHED! There is a laundry and they WILL wash your clothes for baby, however, chances are you will never see them again.

A blanket to wrap bubs in. I took a gorgeous yellow shawl which matched Maya's 'going home' outfit. My midwife was horrified - she said "babies need to be wraped in blankets or they'll get cold". It was February. I ended up wrapping her in a hospital blanket to come home in...

sorry, bit of a threadjack here, but do you think it is part of the training that midwives/maternity nurses get "how to make new mothers feel like useless idiots"? lol. when ella was born we asked a midwife at birthcare if we could bath her and she was so horrified at the way we were doing it she muscled in and gave her her first bath by herself! luckily my midwife arrived and got rid of her

For the hospital I took baby oil, lollies, water my own pillow and a change of clothes (my husband took a book )
I took clothes for piper but did not end up using them as the maternity unit I was in gave me clothes for her to wear while I was there, also I never used the wipes or nappies I took as they supplied everything even maternity pads.

TOOTHBRUSH AND PASTE. My mouth was like a sewer after. Also, people tend to want to take pics and guaranteed, mum will look like crap. With Taine I took makeup! And refused to have my photo taken until afetr I'd had a shower.
