Sorry to bug you about work things on the weekend, but I have a question I hope you can answer....

My top right wisdom tooth is fully through and obviously it got some decay in it because it started crumbling today (as in, there's a massive ditch right through the middle third of the side). If it does this, does it mean that it should hopefully, maybe be dead, and not too painful to remove? I'm going to have to make an appointment with a dentist tomorrow and get a quote to get it removed but I am freaking out totally and completely about it, and if I can reassure myself that it's dead (there was no pain with the crumbling) then it migt not be toooooo bad....

Thats ok, i don't mind

Sounds like it could be dead , but when you get a quote from the dentist just get him to tap it and see if its dead or alive .
But either way , dead or not, you shouldn't feel it, the area should be numb, the only difference is if its crumbly it may break easier , which can take a little longer is all.

Good thing is tho, that its a wisdom tooth, and as its already through im guessing it isn't facing the wrong way or anything, being a wisdom tooth , and therefore a back tooth they are easier to get out .
The reason being that they have 4 roots, so are sturdier and breaking is less common, the trickier ones are the anterior teeth and the first couple that only have 1 or 2 roots, argh , have had some fun times assisting with THOSE extractions.
But make sure ,(cos it is a wisdom tooth after all) that you have plans to take it easy for the week after the extraction
In fact , tell your DF i insist he must wait on you hand and foot ..

LOL yeaaaaah right!! Actually, he's pretty good really, but will just make sure he's at his parents for tea eheheh

I think I might have to get it done on a Thursday arvo and take the Friday off work......we're sooooo short-staffed (2 people in an office that's usually 4) that it makes it really difficult to figure time off.

Could they do something to dull the sharp edges that are left on each side of the ditch until I manage to get it out??

Yep, this is my only wisdom tooth that has come through the whole way - it does face sideways however (out towards my cheek) My other two are impacted, but don't give me any problems so they can wait I'm afraid!!

I'm not good with the dentist putting things in my mouth...last time I had just an x-ray I ended up spewing over him so yeah....I get far far far too nervous and have a somewhat sensitive gag reflex.....

yeah i remember you mentioning the gagging with Xrays (which are horrible little things i must admit)
Im trying to remember something which might help you , a dentist i used to work for had a method for people that had a strong gagging reflex with the xrays, cos he always managed to get it done , no matter how much they would usually gag ....

Just tell the dentist your not good having things in your mouth and if he feels the procedure may take a while ask if you can have breaks every so often

and yes, they should be able to smooth the sides, that shouldn't be too much of a hassle for them
