Topic: Daytime naps Posted: 01 September 2008 at 4:07pm |
My 10 week old boy is having trouble napping. He goes off to sleep ok but only sleeps half an hour. We then have an hour of grumpiness before he gets hungry again so I figure he needs more sleep just not sure what to do.
Has anyone got any suggestions.

Is he wrapped? If not, he could be waking himself up with waving arms?
Cuppatea might be able to help - she used a technique to get her boy to sleep longer that involved watching him and shhh patting him back to sleep as he started to wake. I think I remember that right, but if she sees this she should be able to explain better.
hope someone can help

Jack would often only sleep for 1 cycle. I read somewhere to watch him and shh/pat him back to sleep as he woke after 1 cycle as DJ has said. It wasn't very successful for us but that probably says more about me than the technique!!

I went to the local plunket family centre for the day so they could help me and give me advice on the spot seeing exactly what was happening and trialing a few things to work. It was fantastic though kinda boring while they are asleep lol.

I'm in the same boat. Daniel wakes after one cycle. Plunket recommended leaving him in bed for longer each day - day one 1 hour, day two, one hour ten minutes etc. When he wakes up, leave him in bed. If he gets upset, go in and comfort him, then put him back down and leave. Keep repeating till you get to the time you're aiming for. The theory is that he will get used to being in bed longer and will learn that crying does not equal getting up and playing! That said, this is day two and I'm not overly sure that it will work! I'm planning to go to Plunket Family Centre next week to try and get some tips. Would be good to hear from cuppatea as well.

Thanks for the advice. We live too far away from a Plunket Family Centre for it to be any use but I am, seeing my plunket nurse tomorrow so will ask her advice.
I have tried going in and comferting him - he has a dummy - but he usually ends up screaming the house down after 5mins but I'll keep trying. I figure that I will either find something that works or he will grow out of it - I hope.

If you are close enough to the library 2 books I found good were "No Cry Sleep Solution" and "Sleeping like a baby" by Pinky McKay.
It has taken me a while but I have got used to Jack sometimes only sleeping for 45mins, even now hat he has got down to 1 nap - sometimes if he sleeps 2 hrs I am at a loss of what to do with myself .
"Sleeping like a baby" explained that like adults, each baby needs a different amount of sleep and that if your baby wakes happy then they have had enough, if they wake upset then they haven't and you need to work on that.

Rowena when I went to the Plunket family centre they should me how to rock him - not from side to side but from the feet end of his bassinet. You just rock the foot end up and down gently until they go back to sleep and then slowly stop it - Ollie absolutely loves it. It doesn't always completely put him back to sleep but our bassinet is heavy so we probably don't do it for long enough. It stops him crying immediately!!
The other thing they did was pop a radio off the station and onto white noise and just stick it beside him. That combined with the rocking did work.
